Opinion: Why Alberta needs to kick in for World Cup

Author of the article: Peter Ogilvie
Publishing date:Mar 09, 2022

Over the last two years, there is no segment of Alberta’s economy that has been untouched by the impacts of public health restrictions. While everyone in the business community has faced their fair share of turbulence, the province’s tourism sector has been disproportionately devastated.

Alberta’s tourism industry was incredibly strong and self-sustaining prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, recording 34.7 million visitors and $8.2 billion in tourism expenditures in 2019. Indeed, the province provided some support to our operators in the form of funding and a tourism levy break that helped some businesses on the brink of permanent closure remain open.

However, the Government of Alberta has yet to provide support towards what is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that has the potential to make our province an international destination for major events for the foreseeable future.

That event is the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Sportsnet reports that Edmonton could be a potential host for the NHL Heritage Classic in 2023-2024, to mark the 20th anniversary of the game between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens that took place at Commonwealth Stadium on Nov. 22, 2003 with 57,000 fans in attendance.

Nice to see.

Steve is a fantastic guy and perfect for this role. He has a lot of experience and will bring a cohesive plan to develop the team, game day experience, non-baseball events and overall improvement of the immediate area (inside and outside of the stadium).

The strings attached could be problematic though.

Exclusive: Alphonso Davies opens a window on Edmonton and a World Cup 2026 dream
19th April 2022

April 19 – Canadian and Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies is one of the hottest players in world football. Canada’s talisman from Edmonton has led his nation to their first World Cup finals since 1986. In 2026 he could be leading them out in his home town. Davies speaks exclusively to Insideworldfootball.

Insideworldfootball: First of all, it was announced earlier this year you have been diagnosed with mild myocarditis. Most importantly, how are you and how are you recovering?

Alphonso Davies: I am doing good now. It was a scary moment at first because everything was pretty unknown. It’s never easy or fun sitting on the sidelines having to watch, but I am recovering well and excited to be back on the pitch.

Oilers Playoff Excitement for Downtown Edmonton
---

Curious to see what the plans are if/when a round 2 happens. It will be great to see the exterior square activated.

The outdoor plaza was playing the game on the screens right? And there were people out there watching? Watching from yyc I have no f*cking clue because Sportsnet showed absolutely no footage of it!

Yea a bit disappointing they only used stock footage of the city.
I'm no longer in town and would have liked to see more of the plaza

Awesome, thanks everyone. I don't really go on twitter and all the pics I've seen seemed to be prior to the game / no gameplay on actual screens.

Will be in that crowd for Friday's game!!

Edit: 70% chance of showers Friday night, how nice fml
