No, I specifically remember probably from around 2004 or so, there was a rendering floating around for a fairly substantial building on that lot between McDermot and Bannatyne. I also recall trueviking mentioning that it fell through when Centreventure sold the Waterfront Drive frontage to whoever developed Ship Street Village (Streetside?) because the developer didn't want to build if it wasn't right on Waterfront.

That was a long time ago in internet years so the rendering may no longer be online.

yeah...it was one of the submitted proposals for the waterfront drive parcel....it incorporated the huge parking lot and the ship street condo site....centre venture boneheadedly gave the parcel to ship street to do six units, killing the project and forever land locking the parking lot from the street that gives it a prominent address....

I went to look at a unit in the Porter House development yesterday and I was quite impressed. The units aren't super big as they're all loft-style but the finishes are well done and all the original beams and exposed brick are preserved. The windows are huge, which looks great in comparison to the retrofitted smaller windows at the Bag Factory. There's also a pretty sweet rooftop patio. Hopefully they'll fill up fast.

Two things stuck out at me here:

1) That CV is already/still "planning" on building the James parkade (although only 50 spots?)

2) That it is so obvious now more than ever, with everything happening in Downtown/Exchange/Forks that RT and general transit improvements need to be fast-tracked ASAP. I am a big supporter of not having to bend over to cars downtown and adding bike lanes, but unfortunately Transit right now just isn't a great option for a lot of people in many areas of the city. If you want people to go shopping downtown, and leave their car at home — transit access MUST be better.

I think what they are referring to is the parking that will be included as part of the pumping station development. I'm presuming this will be for residents and office workers in that development only.

Exactly how and where will the angled parking be implemented? Usually those hick towns have rather wide main drags that allow for angled parking. You need more room for the angle, so would need top remove a travel lane on most streets. Which is fine. But not going to happen on streets like Princess or King. Maybe on the low use roads where one lane would be acceptable. But even then, there's usually only 2 lanes anyways. One parking, one travel.

Great ideas, but then reality sets in.

Great ideas, but then reality sets in.

James Ave is as wide as a football field. The stretch from Amy to Lily will remain unchanged for now despite the pumphouse.

I can see them using that strip considering the parking congestion there due to theatre, concerts and residential.

James is a two way street. So they have one travel lane each way and a praking lane each side. Something would have to be lost if they want to put angled parking there. And by the sounds of things, people are upset about the narrowing and losing some parking already.

I'm not completely against it. If it works, great. But let's not get our hopes up for widespread, uber cool angled parking.

The stretch I speak of only has parking on the one side - not to be confused with the Waterfront to Amy stretch beside the pumphouse.

James Ave between Lily and Amy (in front of the 'future' parkade and District Condos) is easily the equivalent of 4 lanes. If they put angle parking on the south side, there would be more than enough room for cars to travel in both directions on that section.

So that'd be a good location. I just don't think it'll be a change to angled parking on every street. Physically not possible and could get confusing. City would just need to keep up with pavement markings. And since a lot of the streets were recently renewed, or being done right now. May have missed the boat.

I talked to a Manitoba Museum employee at the streetscaping open house earlier this year or late last year. Apparently the building is owned by the Centennial Corporation and used by the museum for storage of reasonably unimportant items. I seem to remember him saying that there is no water service to the building anymore and perhaps no heat either.

Looking at it, it looks like it may have been a provincial garage originally. Whatever its original purpose, it was built during the initial reconfiguration of James and Lily when James became the main Disraeli access in about 1963. Look up Biggs Terrace, which was there before...such a terrible loss!

The provincial garages in Winnipeg were all amalgamated into one in the mid 70s which would have made this surplus at that point, which could have led to it being turned over to Cent Corp.
