That proposed W Hotel certainly IS awesome! Now, that's what I'm talking about! Hopefully, the HDRC won't mess this one up, seeing that it's not close to the Alamo. But, you never know. Given its proposed location, they may take up issue with the height of the hotel on the grounds that it may cast a shadow on the historic Milam Building or perhaps even the St. Anthony's Hotel. :-)

Ok, I'm a believer now. The question is, will it be built?! This could end up being a new tallest for San Antonio. It is clearly taller than the Weston Centre in that rendering. The height that I have for the Weston Centre is 466 feet to the top of the frame structure. I still believe the Marriott Rivercenter is not 546 feet as it has been listed in the past. I believe the height is actually 452 feet. That's the height I measured it at. The Marriott also appears shorter to the roof than both the Weston Centre and the Grand Hyatt. So if the Weston Centre really is 466 feet, then this building would become San Antonio's new tallest (not counting the tower). That would be fantastic since if the Weston Centre is the tallest right now that would mean this would be the first new tallest for San Antonio since 1989. Fingers crossed that it'll happen!

Do you think the Marriott Rivercenter is 546 feet to the Spires or whatever they call those things? As for the W Tower, they need to build this and not just tease us with this skyscraper porn, haha, it gets me all excited for nothing.

I know the Hemisfair development and the Rivercenter/Joske's both have high rise development planned.

San Antonio's skyline will be changing over the next few years. I wish we could see a skyscraper boom like in Austin. San Antonio is growing like heck, lots of developments just not in the form of Skyscrapers. San Antonio's historical significance always seems to get in the way when Skyscrapers are planned. It seems everything that is in close proximity to a new skyscraper is of Historical importance. I believe a handful of proposed Towers 20 floors and up have gotten the ax. I want to see some new tall's and this W Hotel, built.

No, I don't think it's that tall to the spires. They don't appear to be as high as the flagpole on the Tower Life Building which is supposed to be at 513 feet, and they don't come anywhere near the bottom of the observation deck on the Tower of the Americas, which is supposed to be at 550 feet.

The tallest I can measure them is 458 feet, and that's from the Riverwalk level along Commerce Street which is at 638 feet above sea level. The spires top out at 1,095 feet above sea level. The street level height in the parking lot along Bowie is even shorter, just 436 feet since the street level elevation is 659 feet above sea level. I remember seeing an old height listed for the building of like 441 feet in one of the old editions of the World Almanac. I wish that I had better heights for San Antonio's buildings. Hotels are hard to get heights for.

It will have great views of the Tower and that part of downtown. It's an interesting location for a hotel that size. Most are on the Hemisfair side of downtown. This will bring tourists and the need to entertain them in the opposite direction, which is probably a good thing.

As far as the height discussion goes, the photo I posted above (taken by someone else) gives you a good rough estimate of the heights. It's taken from about 5-7 miles away "flattening out" the view, so you can pretty much draw a horizontal line across and see which roof is higher than the others.

The engineering group you sited does not seem to have any information on a new W Hotel & Residences project in San Antonio. Do you have an inside source at the firm? Who is the architect?

I don't want to get my hopes up without some hard proof of this project coming to light.

Could these renderings be from the failed attempt several years back?

I love the idea...but, I'm a realist. I can get to Monterrey now, in one hour, for $300 round trip from SAT. If Monterrey is so important to the SA economy, why is AeroMexico the only airline offering daily nonstop flights between SAT & MTY on a small, RJ145 regional jet? Interjet flies to MTY twice a week utilizing an A320...

It does not seem like there are enough business travelers to support daily service via a one hour flight (RJ145) and a high-speed train.

All-in-all, it sounds like Rep. Henry Cuellar will receive some kick-backs if this thing gets off the ground.

Don't get me wrong...this is a cool idea and could be expanded once built. However, it seems like a pipe dream at the moment.
