I'm not a fan of international-style skyscrapers, but I'm definitely in the camp that I would love to see the PSB preserved and renovated. I'm glad the residential conversion of the University Club Tower is happening as well.
I think the COB is ugly but mostly because it's so prominent. More height downtown would solve that problem.
The biggest problem with the international style is how they've turned so many CBD's into architecturally bland and featureless streetscapes. Salt Lake City may have a small downtown, but I appreciate the variety of styles from different eras and think that's a strength of our downtown area.
Does anyone know what's being built on the southeast corner of 100 south and 300? east? I drove by there and there's some pretty intensive construction going on.
I feel like I saw something somewhere that didn't look like that, but I could be imagining it and I couldn't find anything either. If that is what we're getting, I definitely agree with the "ew" response.
That would be a shame to build an office building like that downtown. I was hoping we were past building cheap 2 story buildings in the urban core of the city.
I feel like public ed buildings are between a rock and a hard place -- if they built something really high quality in terms of either design or materials, ESPECIALLY something that's for the administration for the school district (not being used by students) they'd be accused of abusing taxpayer dollars and public trust. So...we end up with things like this. When Granite School District bought the abandoned hospital at 2500 S State (I worked in it for 6 years) people called it the "Taj Mahal"...I can only imagine what they would say if a school district were to build something truly lovely or innovative.
So...we get this.

I wish it was being converted because I think it's kind of a cool building. But those two images are from the same corner and direction. How would that be a conversion? Aside from the different materials, the buildings are oriented in different directions. Current building is East to West. Rendering is South to North.

That rendering doesn't match the plans and sections in the Building Salt Lake article. That rendering seems to be a proposal to demo the existing office building. I wonder which one is more current...that rendering OR the plans in the Building Salt Lake article.

The BSL article is from 2021. The rendering more closely matches the current rendering on the developer site.
Glad that's moving forward. I really hope we get more red brick infill like that around Trolley Square. It would give that area a distinct character that matches the old trolley buildings.

If you look at the updated design on the website, it's now just the first two floors that will get brick. But I guess some brick is better than no brick?

Ah, too bad. The stucco is a significant downgrade. Good density and street engagement though (3000 sq ft commercial), so I think it's still mostly a win.
I also notice that they have that other residential project to the north in this rendering.
