I would think that they made extra replacement glass parts in case it was ever damaged...

I don't know how true it is, but I've heard there are actually several replacement cauldrons that were made. Meaning, I suppose, any piece could be replaced.

They are one of the few things remaining that VANOC isn't trying to auction off Though how cool would it be to have one, you'd have the best BBQ on the block.

I doubt that the BC Place cauldron was built as a permanent thing but it'd be really cool if they could put it or some smaller cauldron outside BC Place in conjunction with the renovations.

for extra pieces should the one on display get trashed - we know there is the one used indoors for back up pieces...

^ the indoor cauldron at BC Place is actually very different from the real outdoor cauldron at the convention centre...it was built differently and it even looks quite different.

Hopefully something good and a reasonable price, I would love to sit in that little patio like section.

lollll....i was thinking more along the lines of VANOC having spare glass parts, not whole cauldrons in the corner of a convention centre storage area inside boxes filled with confetti. :p

I would like to see a torchbearer light up the cauldron in the evening and then firework afterward. Instead of the Olympic rings, I would like to see a giant Maple leaf on a barge lit up.

Recent picture of the cauldron. The map of Canada will be put in the middle of the reflection pool. A lot of electric wires were sticking out from the top of the cauldron. Maybe they are adding new lights.

I walked by the Cauldron on a sunny Saturday afternoon and took the following pictures.

Workers doing maintenance work on the Cauldron. The glass piece seems to be very heavy.
It took the workers a long time to bolt a glass piece onto the Cauldron surface. Don't drop it!

It looks like the Cauldron will be well maintained.
I guess we don't have to worry about spare glass piece for the Cauldron. Based on the information on the side of the truck, the glass piece is manufactured by a local company in Coquitlam. The company produces various type of glass for different applications like decorative art panels, countertops, tables etc. If you are interested, their website is at http://studiog3glass.com/

Vancouver's Olympic cauldron to be relit on Canada Day

VANCOUVER -- The Olympic Cauldron will be relit on July 1 by Canada Day organizers hoping to rekindle the national pride that drew hundreds of thousands of people downtown during the Vancouver 2010 Games.

The cauldron on Jack Poole Plaza has been dead since the end of the Paralympics in March, but Canada Place says it will be relit on July 1 to help celebrate Canada's national birthday.

And as such, they're also expecting hundreds of thousands of people to flood downtown to see the flame and to participate in a festival at Canada Place that will end with an evening parade and a fireworks show over Burrard Inlet.

Brett Calder, a spokeswoman for Canada Place, said despite the anticipated warm weather, she thinks many people will bring their Olympic mittens downtown. "It will be a sea of maple leafs," she said. Last year more than 100,000 people showed up for the inaugural parade.

To help create a festive atmosphere, Canada Place is closing the road in front of both convention centres to vehicle traffic all the way to Jack Poole Plaza, the site of the cauldron. The festival goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the convention centres, with the second annual parade beginning at 7 p.m. on Georgia Street at Broughton.

It will move eastward before heading on to Howe Street and circling back on Dunsmuir to end at Thurlow, underneath the shadow of the Bentall towers. The cap to the day will be at 10:30 p.m. when the Burrard Inlet Fireworks Society will put up a pyrotechnic extravaganza from two barges moored in the inlet.

The events are being sponsored by the federal government, Canada Place and the fireworks society.

Ah. Now that the Cauldron re-lit plan is official. Workers have only 9 days to finish the work.
Today workers were still working on the Cauldron ignition electrical system while others were laying more steel bar for the bottom of the pool.
I hope there is no technical glitch on Canada Day and the Cauldron can lit up!
I wonder what time the Cauldron will be lit. Ok. I need to get my camera ready and get to the plaza early on that day. The place will be very crowded.
