A memorial that is dedicated to thousands of people who died in horrible deaths for nothing is certainly NOT a waste.

And also, if it's not built, the 09-11 families will balk up, there'll be a big squabble,
they'll be threatening to sue. They'll also threaten to have the construction friggen stopped, and how many times have we seen that?!

The case would go to court and tie things up, creating another slowdown and delays. The whole constructon timetable will be thrown off.......... this..........that........ nah, nah, nah!!

We don't need any more delays now that the plan must meet a strict timeline!

Wrong; it's got practically the same footprint and same roof height as the old Twins. However, the FT elegantly tapers, so it's interior volume is considerably lower.

But who cares? I don't remember ever looking at a tower and going, "WOW! Would you look at the volume of that thing!"

Well, I was one of those people who did admire the volume of the original WTC towers. It wasn't just the height that was impressive, it was its girth. Out-of-towners were always so focused on how tall they were that they were always surprised when they would go near them and discover how BIG they really were. They always expected them to be thinner (just goes to show you how tall they really were, that they looked skinny but were really quite "fat").

And, since they didn't taper at all, the "bigness" was more pronounced as the person looked up at them.

Anyway, since I do believe the footprint of FT is that same, I'm satisfied.

Don't forget that the original WTC towers did have that plaza in between, so there was some open space even before. I think with all the big towers going up, it's good to have some open space (otherwise, where can you sit and look up to admire all the buildings?

As for the memorial itself, I'm rather neutral. I do agree there should be a memorial, but I don't think it had to be so big (i.e., take up so many acres). But, the green space is good, so it doesn't bother me. I'm actually looking forward to seeing those two rather large and dramatic waterfalls.

The thing about the memorial is that it will be mostly underground, topped by what is essentially a park and giant waterfalls. In that sense, its not a waste at all. We knew there had to be a memorial at the site, and in fact, some people wanted the entire site left for the memorial. I think we got a pretty good deal here. A very good deal.

Part of that was that not only did the relatives go whining on Pataki's shoulders about not wanting the Twins back. They also asked him not to let anything be built on the two spots where the towers once stood.

They were also playing watchdog. If they felt or even had the slightest hint that something WAS being put there, such as part of the PATH Station platforms, they'd go running back to the officials and threaten to have the rebuild stopped.

That's how we ended up with the two giant voids where the towers were.

Yeah, I'd say so: a spectacular new city park complete with world-class water features. It's sobering to think that instead of an entire new district of stunning supertall towers and parks, we might have ended up with a 16-acre cemetery in the middle of an economic wasteland.

the sound of the waterfalls is meant to drown out the noise of traffic on west st and most other ambient city noise.
