Ground breaks on Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill’s NATO Headquarters
By: Dennis Lynch | February - 16 - 2011

Following a groundbreaking ceremony this past December, work has begun on the Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM) designed NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The stunning €460m headquarters will replace the “temporary” buildings have been in use since 1967. SOM was awarded the contract back in 2003 but it took seven years for construction to begin.

SOM says of their design, “Like fingers interlaced in a symbolic clasp of unity and mutual interdependence, the design for this international treaty organization headquarters represents its changing mission from opposition and prevention to unification and integration”.

Newport, Wales is cut in two by its rail line and its old train station was seriously in need of an upgrade. With the Ryder Cup set to take place in October of 2010, the city and Network Rail decided to upgrade, thus improving their rail service and providing an improved connection between the disparate sides of the city. London-based Grimshaw Architects came up with a spiraling, silver station with two concourses on either side of the tracks. Energy efficiency was kept at the heart of the design and rainwater is harvested off the domed roofs.

Golden Dream Bay: Moshe Safdie’s Pixelated Sky Garden Apartments For the Coast of China
by Bridgette Meinhold, 02/28/11

Moshe Safdie, designer of the famous Habitat 67, has taken his classic design element, the pixel, and updated it for a massive residential complex in Qinhuangdao, China. Golden Dream Bay is a pixelated dream of sky gardens, rooftop pools, sky bridges and green pathways running along the beach. Safdie, much like Bjarke Ingels of BIG, likes to provide each of his residences with access to views and private garden space.

Hey gang,

Haven't been to this forum for a while, so I apologize if this belongs in a different thread. Please advise/ move if necessary.

I've been living in Beijing since '09 and recently happened upon this structure which looks like it's going to be rather interesting. The Google sat image shows its location, obviously taken prior to groundbreaking, and the following images show its current state of construction.

Anyone have information on the project/ architect/ etc.?

Belle van Zuylen, Utrecht / by de Architekten Cie. Amsterdam

de Architekten Cie shared with us their project, the mixed-use “Belle van Zuylen”, in Utrecht, Netherlands. The primary functions are living and working (offices), but there is also room for shopping, recreation, cafés and restaurants, and cultural activities.

Looks like the answer to my question was right there in my own photos. Enlarging a couple of them yields the project photo and name on the perimeter wall; The Phoenix International Media Center.

Unfortunately, Google doesn't find much info on it... This was the best link;
http://www.biad-ufo.cn/en/projectssh...rs=&workfield=

And this pdf has some project specifics;
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sourc...fOjZpw&cad=rja

Anyway- I'll get back there as time permits and take more photos if anyone is interested in seeing the progress.

I found this blog full of much vitriole and architecture. In my opinion, some of teh designs highlighted are truely bad, as implied in teh name of the blog, but others actually look decent and might be appropriate here. Anyway, it's worth a read just for the amusement of seeing how offended the author gets by some of the designs.

Final design unveiled for Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco

Pelli Clarke Pelli presented the final design for the Transbay Transit Center on Thursday to the Transbay Joint Powers Authority Board (TJPA) in San Francisco, Calif. The glass-and- steel complex, which will serve 12 transit systems including the future California High Speed Rail, is noticeably minus its original iconic tower and includes new features as well.

One of those features is a 5.4-acre rooftop park with a 100-seat outdoor amphitheater for musical performances, space for evening film screenings, cafes and restaurants. The park will have 20 sub-environments including an amphitheater, a children's playground, public artworks and a lily pond, providing rich educational and recreational experiences to the public. A 1,000-foot long fountain shaped like a bus will automatically be activated when a bus passes underneath the park.
