Promised jobs, North Philly community backs Beury redevelopment on N. Broad

Quote:
The proposed 101,000-square-foot, mixed-use complex at 3709 North Broad Street will replace a small Checkers restaurant that will be demolished. It’s right next door to The Beury Building, the original home of The National Bank of North Philadelphia, also known as the “Boner 4Ever” building because of the graffiti on the roof. SHIFT also owns the Beury building and plans to transform it into Marriott Hotel, though the pandemic put the project on hold. SHIFT told PlanPhilly that they have just begun a community benefits agreement (CBA) for that project.
I was a little worried the Pandemic completely nixed this, but glad to see they are still going ahead with the low-rise building. Boner4ever's time will come one day.

PBJ has an article about Vanguard's decision to move to permanent hybrid or office hoteling setup for employees in contrast to many competing financial firms. I do wonder if this is partially to make vanguard more attractive to city residents who really don't want to commute to Chester County.

This completely threw off all hope of the trolley modernization.
THis is in Clark's district? News to me.

So no one protested about it and here we are now. a amazon warehouse in the middle of a neighborhood, I guess banging vans and trucks is better then trolley sounds.
well my understanding is Amazon is moving to electric trucks so Im not sure that noisy vans (if the current models even qualify as noisy) is really a long term concerns. One thing is for sure, no one in the neighborhood was going to get a new job from the trolley facility since they would be simply transferring existing union workers from one site to another.

Again, confusion on my part. Clark is a crumb bum but this isn’t his district and not his fault.

Note to self: don’t post on SSP after a 12 hour shift outside.

Well I wasn't exactly talking about the noise of the engine, I meant trucks loading and unloading is the noisy part. That will be heard around the area however it's good they are going to be using electric vehicles.

Now while yes Amazon is a job the burn out rate for Amazon is high, they will be running through people like its a race, but opportunity is better than no opportunity.

Makes me wonder in 50 years will we see abandoned Amazon warehouses like we saw in the 80-90's with Car Manufacturing, steel and etc.

My bet is that it's mostly about keeping current employees happy and out of the hands of other employers offering remote work. That said, it also helps them attract workers from the city (and other parts of the region) and attract other financial workers from the other investments bigs who might not be thrilled to be going back to the office five days a week. Some peon Vanguard analyst should be creating a deck right now targeting Goldman workers from New York about living like a king in Philly.

Pattison Place / Fusion Arena

I hate when people do this, but I'll do it now.
Does anyone have any inside info about Pattison Place or the Fusion Arena proposals for the Stadium District? Some other construction projects that had been put on hold because of the pandemic have resumed, but I have not heard about either of these - whether they are canceled or proceeding.

No idea about Pattinson place.

The Fusion arena is probably dead, considering that Overwatch is a dead game and the competitive league has been suffering financially.

Oh don’t get me wrong, a competitive gaming arena would do very well. Comcast just dug themselves into a hole by branding it exclusively for OWL.

Oh 100% who bases an arena off of one game, thats dumb anyone could have seen that failing if you build a game arena it should be used for all games that can be in that setting.

Hopefully it will come back, because thats a very big market and would bring a different element to Philly. E-sports!

Although they cited Overwatch in their plans, I kind of doubt they were predicating their success on that one game/one league exclusively and I can imagine an e-gaming arena's functionality would be flexible enough to support e-sports in whatever form as new games come to prominence.

That would probably be the case, no one could you sustain a business let alone an arena off of one game it would have to be flexible.

I would hope that wasn't the case for this & it will still happen.

Does anyone know if they moved to that building across from the Police HQ on broad? I saw Egaming signs on the windows and renovations happening inside.

It's unrelated. N3rd Street Gaming is opening an outpost there. I would love if more of these projects would move forward and put Philly on the map for competitive gaming and maybe poach some streamers from California where they have a high cost of living but could be done anywhere. Comcast especially could bring them in as a media conglomerate

It looks like you'd have to be talking about the historic Terminal Commerce Building at 401 N. Broad, which largely functions as a 'carrier hotel' housing telcos and network providers. I found a zoning appeal scheduled to be heard by ZBA today, according to atlas:

https://atlas.phila.gov/401%20N%20BROAD%20ST/zoning
ZP-2021-003253
PERMIT FOR A NIGHT CLUB AND PRIVATE CLUB ( MAXIMUM OF 500 PEOPLE) (Accommodate general escort competition and spectatorship as well as participant or spectator recreation to observe and participate in the training, development and competition of electronic gamers with accessory preparation and serving of food ) AT FIRST ON THE SAME LOT WITH ALL OTHER USES AS PREVIOUSLY APPROVED. NO SIGN ON THIS APPLICATION.
07/21/2021

Listed for 2pm today (that's always just a very rough estimate)

While Comcast has been a big supporter of E-Sports, it's actually 5 Below who runs and operates Localhost locations. They're planning on putting more and more of them actually in their stores which is a great idea imo, because you are already getting kids coming through the door. Seems that permit means they are trying to host a lot bigger events in the North Broad building.
