I think there must be a piece of tape, plastic, packaging etc in the middle of each section of the balcony glass, and the "double size" pane is what it looks like when that's removed. It would explain why some of the lines in the middle of each section aren't straight/parallel

Is it just me who can't see Enrigue's photos linked from mtlurb.com? (even though I can browse directly to the links without an issue)

I don't even see a link on enrigue8's posts... just some words and the rest is blank. Where are you getting mtlurb.com from ?

If you start a quoted reply to the post, you'll see the links, which seem to be properly formed. I wonder if that site is doing something to discourage cross-linking of it's assets? I see they also do automatic watermarking.

Hmmm....I looked at the pictures by copying the links you see in the reply into a new browser page. After that, if I go BACK, the pictures show here as they should.

Ya, I saw that too, but if you clear your browser cache they're gone again. So that's just your browser storing them temporarily on your computer (an knowing which link they came from). skyscraperpage.com still seems to have an issue pulling them from mtlurb.com in the first place. They may have blacklisted us from loading their images.

Editing the post so it's URL instead of IMG makes them clickable links

That is odd, isn't it. It's also substantially thicker (about 4 times) than the rest of the balconies in that photo. Its lower side extends so far down that the windows of the unit below it are shorter than all other units. The clunky shape may be from the one-off custom formwork that was used here. Weird. Does it need to support a huge weight?

That's a terrace on the 8th floor, SW unit. concrete upstand and depressed slab make for the thickness. Depressed slab so one can install paving stones, or whatever they are using. I don't know the details of the rest of the slab on that floor, and how it affects the floor below.

Interesting... thanks! In that view from above you can also see two more large "terraces" above the one with the depressed slab, which don't have a depressed slab.

The 8th floor balcony is special, as in the initial rendering.

That rendering also has plain glass railings... looks very similar to what we are seeing installed.

I snapped this picture yesterday while driving past the building. It looks like the balcony glass going up on the front of the building (facing Carling) is getting a much nicer frosted balcony glass.

Based on the rendering posted by eltodesukane, perhaps only the front of the building is getting the frosted/whiter balcony glass and the Preston Street facing balconies are getting the transparent glass we've seen so far.

I can live with that. I think given the year we've had (LRT, Lebreton, Sens) we are all too quick to start the "why can't we ever have nice things?" complaining. I still look forward to the finished product on this bad boy.

is there something special about that condo? It just seems weird that it's inconsistent.

I may have sent an 'old man yelling at clouds' rant to Councillor McKenney regarding the bait and switch, asking her how we can demand better of our developers (while at the same time supporting intensification and taller building developments)

That is exactly what this group is all about. Pushing for more urban intensification but demanding better quality developments. In general, I think we are getting that in Ottawa but not always.
