They must be testing lights at Robson Square. If you watch Global you can see them firing them up behind them.

Looks... BRIGHT!

Some pics I took yesterday. Expect a full thread (probably 2 full threads) in the photo subforum later today.

...
With Robson Square being the non-accredited media center, expect to see lots of video crews bumping into each other around the VAG and Robson St. (when it goes pedestrian-only) to get the man-on-the-street segments.

If you're hanging around downtown and look presentable, don't be surprised to get your 15 seconds of fame.

Oh, I have noticed that. The weather part is particularly noticeable. I wonder why they do that, now.

Tonight, Gobal (I think) had a helicopter shot of the new convention centre west plaza showing something that looks like a cauldron from overhead, but it's all covered up in scaffolding and shrouds so you can't see anything from the street.

A rumour I heard is that identical cauldrons are in Whistler, Vancouver convention centre (the media centre), and outside BC Place (visible from Athletes village).

Will they will be lit simultaneously by some magical dazzling means when the indoor BC Place cauldron is lit?

Just two more sleeps and we'll know.....

Cheaper production costs when the only real-world items on screen are the person and the podium they sit behind. Everything else you see 'in the studio' is computer generated. It's quite amusing to see two or three people crowd shoulder-to-shoulder around the small podium when throwing to other segments.

CHEK (Shaw Cable 6) has been doing their newscasts that way for a while now.

With James Cameron's Avatar showing what can be done digitally, you can bet that the TV networks are trying to come up with realistic-looking computer generated news readers so they can cut the expense of salaried news anchors sitting in a TV studio. Are we ready for a digital Lloyd Robertson or Peter Mansbridge to tell you what's been happening today? Or a new & improved Max Headroom for the news channels?

Holy crap, I can't believe they're actually doing something cool with the giant blank side of Sears. Guess they needed at least one side clean on which to project images.

"How many people live in Canada?"

"I don't know, too many?"

Ahh USA, the old dumb rich cousin we suck up to for nice presents and visit once or twice a year.

I still laugh thinking about Rick Mercer's "Talking To Americans". The bit about the north pole ice-cap breaking apart, and the problems we'll have with a "bi-polar canada".
Classic.

To me the best part in that show was "Should we destroy the Saskatchewan Navy base"
