There have been semi-permanent tent sites sprouting up in front of St Paul's Hospital as well as the Detox Centre on Seymour/Helmcken for months or years already. Looks like the City isn't doing anything about those. Without any reprisals, the City is simply giving a greenlight for transients to spread throughout downtown, and even beyond to other areas.

BUT that's ok, we are very safe, even if there are drugs and guns found in some of those tents.

Let's face it. These folks with their degrees in environmentalism and liberal arts have absolutely no value in today or tomorrow's job market and are basically permanently unemployable. In other words, prime people to become advocates and activists.

Yeah, well done by VPD. High respect for their job in dealing with the nutcases.

One minor problem with your statement is the story you linked to said one of the protestors has a degree in engineering, and the other is training as an auto mechanic. The SFU student who was referenced is studying economics.

I'm not sure whether criminal convictions disqualify you from working in the gig economy; if they do, then yes. Do you think gig workers are second-class citizens? Is there something wrong with a university student earning some cash on the side?

But as Changing City mentioned, I am referring to their degrees and fields of study which are neither environmentalism nor liberal arts. Maybe you can stop with the stereotypes and realize that this "loser" has the opportunity to be successful in a conventional sense but he is throwing it away for something he believes in. Someone like Zain Haq is putting even more on the line since he could be deported.

And you wonder why people are giving up on transit. I can't imagine how traumatizing this would be for the young women involved:

Man allegedly chews off woman’s thumb, attacks passengers on SkyTrain
Nikitha Martins
Aug 22 2022

A woman had her thumb “chewed off” by a man who allegedly “lost his temper” on the SkyTrain and assaulted a group of young women and a bystander.

On Wednesday, August 17, two 18-year-olds and a 20-year-old commuting home say they noticed a man filming and taking pictures of them.

According to a social media post shared by one victim’s family member, when the group of young women asked the man to stop, the interaction escalated and the man allegedly attacked the three women.

The stranger allegedly bit off one woman’s finger, put another in a headlock, punched another in the face and pulled off her shirt....

What is the point of you (and others here) trolling through the internet and posting 'bad things happen' stories as if they happen all the time, and they're therefore a constant threat to everyone?

The attack on the young woman on the bus was obviously traumatic. There's no doubt a back story (some of which was reported, and some of it has yet to be explained). In your mind, does that justify never travelling on transit? Should you take an Uber instead? Maybe take a cab? It's a good thing Greyhound have stopped running, because we know riding long distance buses is dangerous. Never take transit or any type of rideshare, buy a car and drive everywhere? Vin has clearly shown that it's not safe to walk anywhere in the city because you might be attacked by a stranger. Maybe we should all just stay home and never leave the house. Oh wait, that's not safe either.

We live in disturbing times. Anyone who doesn't realize that isn't reading this site (or any news at all). All you are doing is increasing the noise in the echo chamber. Isn't that what reddit is for?

This thread has been a toxic waste dump ever since a couple of posters here decided it would be their fear mongering sounding board. One can only surmise it feels therapeutic for them to justify their continued existence holed-up at home in fear of their own shadows. What else would be the point? It can't be to live out their authoritarian fantasies because no one in a position of power to change any of this will read this. Every one of us gets and reads the news like everyone else but we certainly don't obsess about it to the point like these two posters that we need to repost it on an urbanist message board.

What could be more germane to urbanism than threats to urban living? You live in OV, that 70 year old bashed on the seawall could have been one of your parents. The woman knifed at Alder & Broadway could have been your coworker.

As to "no one in a position of power to change any of this will read this", well we already know one candidate follows SSP and others likely do.

OV? Nope not me, must have me confused with someone else. And yes I'm acutely aware of the increase in public disorder as you say and take individual steps to protect myself and my family. But to the point of obsessing it day-in and day-out? What's the point? It's like doom-scrolling bad news about COVID back in 2020- except you're the one creating the endless doom scroll! It doesn't do anything good for your mental health. The best you can do and SHOULD do is to take care of you and your own.

And which candidate would that be? A Vancouver mayoral/council candidate? Like I said, no one that would have any power to affect any real change would be reading this...unless you have Provincial/Federal parliamentarians lurking here too? Maybe direct your efforts to writing your local MP/MLA instead of re-posting articles here.

Where are all your posts about climate change, rising sea levels, NIMBYism, car dependence, and racism/segregation then? All very germane threats in our city. Unless, of course, you don't care about germane threats to living in our city and you care more about fearmongering.

Crime in urban areas is not a 'threat to urban living' unless that's how you perceive it, and portray it that way to others. It's not even at an all time high in Vancouver. Crime in rural areas is just as big an issue, and as you know because you read every report of every crime in the Lower mainland, crime in suburban areas, especially violent crime and murder, is a huge concern. It's even getting international attention.

Uber's had 141 rapes and 988 sexual assault cases during the lockdown alone. Are we going to ban ridesharing? Of course not; 99.99% of trips go smoothly.

It's "Better Safe Than Surrey" for a reason, after all. They've got much more of an image problem than we do.

Can't face reality of what's happening out there? Perhaps you shouldn't come into this thread if it stresses you out so much. Go walk on the streets more if it is more therapeutic to you. Can't help you much if your fingers keep slipping and you click in here feeling disturbed.

Thanks Vin. I did just return from a therapeutic walk around the neighborhood. I wasn't assaulted nor did I witness any assaults today.

This is the same result as the past 14,600 or so walks I've done here previously and elsewhere. Maybe I'm just a lucky bastard or an oblivious one. But you probably need some counseling of some sort if you behave as you do online in real life.

Too much of a coincidence that fires keep destroying small businesses and herirtage buildings? Blame this City/province for converting these into SROs and just leave them to rot: some responsible government there.

There’s been an alarming number of devastating fires in Vancouver lately, and one restaurant just can’t seem to catch a break.

Keep doing what's best for you. I don't get why you keep coming back here if you are so stressed. You should be advising those behaving erratically or even violently on the streets to get counselling. It would be a waste of slim resources on me.

How's that nice walk of yours at the DTES?
