You don’t think it’s probably here to stay for awhile (30-50 years)?

TBH, you’re probably right. Hotels have a bad habit of overstaying their welcome, even after umpteen rounds of renovations and/or brand changes. The thing that gives me pause is how valuable the land is, and will continue to become. At some point I’d guess that it would make sense to knock it down and build a tower with a Hyatt Place AND 300 condo units. Or office. Etc.

FWIW I feel the same way about the Courtyard a couple blocks away. A super valuable half-block property that’s only about 10 stories tall. You could quintuple the height and make millions on condos with a park view and great transit accessibility and still have a Courtyard included in the build.

Completely agree. That's on my personal target list for redevelopment. Needs to go, stat.

That parking garage is or was for the convention center. I would be wondering if with the shake up that's coming for the convention center if part of the plan includes redeveloping that garage.

There's no HGI in this photo, are y'all referring to the Hyatt or the Hampton? I quite like the Hyatt Place but the Hampton is trash.

The actual downtown HGI isn't very pretty either.

I have stayed at the Hampton Inn and Suites after attending a wedding at what is now The Chive HQ. Went to the Cedar Door afterwards. Affordable and perfect for what I needed. Had a great time.

Plus I feel it is a poverty siding homage to the Stephen F. Austin hotel. So it has a tad bit of merit. Ok Im done backing it lol.

I assume all 3 of those hotels are on 20 year lifespans and were built as such.

The Hyatt Place there is actually pretty nice. I stayed there on a business trip back to Austin once before we moved back. Decent views also.

Street closures for tower crane installation - the dates haven't been added to the permit yet.

https://abc.austintexas.gov/public-s...rtyrsn=2019035

EDIT: The date was added and it's the first weekend in June (06/04-06/06).

Things will be great when you're downtown.

Since this one does not have underground levels, it seems like cement may have been poured by now signifying that it is officially U/C. Has anybody been by the site recently?

Drove past the site today. Full on construction at this point with lots of rebar on site.

Are columns going up? The tower crane is still scheduled to go up the first weekend in June.

Wait... Maybe I am confused here. There are two of the same tower going up with this and Republic Square... Or am I missing something? Is this Sim City?
