Slow down, this isn't something that should be encouraged at all.

I was originally very happy the city offered to move 100 Stanley across the street. It is a gorgeous house, and absolutely should be saved if it can be. The bridge and infrastructure improvements are definitely necessary, but saving that house is something the city should be willing to do if possible.

Same goes for the building on King. London has nothing else like that old hotel, and the owner is being extremely stubborn and careless letting it rot. I hate seeing owners act like that. What should honestly happen in that situation is the city recognizes it's an important building worth saving, and offers bonusing to that cheap, stubborn developer so he can make some of his money back.

Demolition by neglect is cowardly and thoughtless. Screw him.

I agree and now its on her head if the house gets knocked down. The people around her are supporting her delusions unfortunately, she claimed in the article from the 26th she was waiting to hear if the house is movable when the city already offered that as a solution which she said no to.

I am happy the city is moving forward with this and we may finally see some action

A house mover called into radio show and mentioned that he had alot of experience with moving and demolition of these homes when Horton was expanded and rebuilt. They are plaster and latte on the walls and guaranteed that it would all crack and fall off if a move was attempted. Basically all the interior walls would need to be replaced and any mouldings at a huge expense. You would basically be moving the shell only and redoing all the electrical and plumbing. Would be cheaper to build a replica from scratch.

Send in the bulldozers ASAP.

The Byron barn owner tore it down overnight last night. I might actually listen to the AM980 show from 9-12 today, this could be interesting lol. I guess when the city issued an "order to make safe", this isn't exactly what they had in mind, but at least it is safe now. Funny though that when this story first came out before Christmas, there were many people in Byron, me being one for the last 10 years and my wife has lived here since she was a teenager, never even knew about this barn. The people in the condo complex only really cared because it kept more condos from being built beside them, which is what the owner planned.

I lived in Byron up until 2011 and I knew of the barn for a long time. I had read about it in a book about London history at a library. I had walked by it quite a few times and liked how it was one of the only reminders of Byron’s agricultural heritage, particularly as the area is mostly cookie-cutter subdivisions.

Contrary to popular belief, it was actually visible from Boler Road. Not prominently, but I remember passing it last time I was in London less than two months ago.

It would have made a great museum.

Ah the unspoken truth of why the neighbors didn't want it demolished. Could we see a new condo on this lot in the future?

That's what I had heard late last year when he started ripping it down. But I don't know for sure, since it's not exactly a large piece of property. The roadway of that neighbouring complex ends basically at the barn so there might be room to build 4 more units there, 2 on each side of the road. Apparently, he had a demo permit 12 years ago but it expired before he got around to it. This was right in the crush of the credit crunch and recession so maybe that affected his plans at the time and who knows what else he had going on since. Funny but not surprising though that he got the permit back then and the city never batted an eye or did anything since, until this.

So back on the original subject of this thread lol. I notice Nan's red car still in her driveway. I wonder what the final result of the expropriation was, and if the COVID situation changed anything. I recall the city saying they were proceeding with expropriation with a closing date of March 31.Maybe the city closed on the property and are letting her stay on a month to month basis until they absolutely have to have her out.

I believe the City has already purchased the commercial building across from Nan's. I doubt we would see it demolished in 2020.

I noticed the house next door to Nan's is now for sale. 98 Stanley, $419,900. Probably will be a nice property to have after the work next door is done. Since Wharncliffe is basically widening to the west and with Nan's house gone, that will be a nice open space beside it. Might even be able to get the lot from the city for a decent price.

Seems a little pricey for 420k?

More like the 300k range if the insides look as good as the outsides. Lots of work to be done.

City council has expropriated the property at 100 Stanley and is complete. While they compassionately allowed granny to stay, she's still being stubborn and unreasonable. While council had initially offered a more generous amount for the home, having held things up and going though a long drawn out expropriation, they've now lowered it. October 1 is now judgement day for her to thankfully be gone!

She has 4 months now to find a new home. More then enough. Yet I won't be surprised she squanders the time and claims she is on the street come Oct 1. The city should bring in tree service now and start clearing the lot. Might focus her mind on the task at hand.

I notice the neighbour's house isn't listed anymore. Never did see a sold sign on it, just saw that the realtor sign was gone a few a weeks ago, the signpost still there, as if the sign blew off or was stolen. But it's not on realtor.ca anymore either. So I wonder if it sold or they took it off the market. If it did sell, it would be interesting to see what it went for compared to what the city offered Nan.

And just like that, the neighbour's house is listed again, with a different agent, and for $40k less than before. I'm really curious what the city is paying for Nan's.

From my understanding by CTVs story while the property has been expropriated they're still negotiating compensation. Offering to move the home and the initial above market value offer ($500k) were to sweeten things and get them moved quickly. The fact that she has been so bitter and unreasonable this whole time has factored in to newer offer being market value. No reason to extend goodwill to someone who has none on her end.

Ultimately I don't see granny ever agreeing to anything "out of principle" as it would be her surrendering, even though the war is lost and over.

Be glad when construction is in full swing!

I have driven by that house so many times I can't count, and not once have I ever seen her out or tending to those gardens she loves so much. Speaking of which, I don't get how people can call that beautiful? To me it looks like a rats nest of weeds.

Thumbs up

Fuckin long overdue! How much time and effort did this woman waste for nothing? The inevitable was bound to happen, could've agreed to this years ago and spared everyone!
