I went down there tonight and it was quite a surreal scene.
Lots of workers milling around, Sam Adams snapping photos, a gaggle of citizens, news media down on Moody, even the infamous bike and public transit hater Jim Karlock with a video camera.
I sat on my bike for awhile up on Macadam just north of the site and eventually a very friendly and informative PDOT guy came over and explained to me that they were running behind and it would be several hours (possibly 2am) before they installed the second part of the tower because the Thompson people had forgotten the specialized attachments that they needed to attach the tower piece to the crane hooks and thus hoist it up. They had sent some folks back up to Vancouver to grab them. I was imagining Karlock doing calculations in his head as to the additional cost this would incur to the project...
I then went and checked out the Meriweather and ran into the same security guard I saw last time. This time he threatened to call the police on me after I told him that I was "just visiting a friend" as I rode by him and then was clearly loitering in front of the towers (trying to imagine how all that concrete was going to look in 10 years) for a few minutes. Go figure.
Icing on the cake: on my way back by the tram site, Karlock was driving off in his big old belching 1970's GAS GUZZLING beater and actually yelled "lights!!" at me before realizing that I did indeed have a blinking back light on my bike. He really does look in person just as old and crotchety as you might imagine from his endless and ever-redundant comments on local blogs like PDXTransport and Sam's. If you don't know who the guy is (and you care) do a google search. Know thy enemy, right?
Jim "autophile extraordinaire" Karlock:
Unfortunately, I left my camera at home.
