Maybe the engineering firm that's moving in does mining work and that's where the gold samples will be tested.

As promised, from week ago.

I hadn't event realized that there is this piece-of-shit-building that is going to remain? What a waste of opportunity if true. Extra annoying is to know that the neighbouring building has obviously been built to be built right next as there are no windows on this side. Unbelievable.

They tried buying it out but the owner wanted an unrealistic price. It's unfortunate and the greedy owner will end up losing long term as the property has limited redevelopablity now.

Thanks for the update, the pic is great.

Maybe one day a tall but skinny building could be built there, like some in Melbourne.

I doubt anything is going to replace that soap box ever. Whereas Hotel Kingston will likely succeed in creating some interesting variation in the streetscape, this building is just demolition-ready.

What an greedy idiot of an owner.

I ranted about this piece-of-crap building on this thread a while back. What is the owner thinking?? Hopefully not that he'll get more money then the developer was offering. That is unlikely to be the case, in my humble opinion, as the development potential of this site is now greatly limited by the fact that the new building has windows facing the north. The only reason the developers offered what they did is because of what the land would be worth incorporated into the new development. The city should expropriated this land in the name of good development and not leaving rinky-dink orphaned properties with all the wasted density and assorted problems that go along with them.

Check it.. they won't be able to fit squat into the space between the two buildings.

Huh??? Google image narrow buildings for example. There are tons of really skinny narrow buildings crammed onto narrow lots Why do you think something can't be built there?

Also, does anyone even know what the developer was offering?

By the way, it would be sweet to see the narrow building demolished and an ultra-quaint alleyway created, complete with cafés, pubs and restaurants or mini retail on either sides. Vancouver needs more surprise spaces like this.

You won't get a quaint alley leading to the back of Granville Street - more like an open urinal...

Urinal? Vomitorium more likely. Dream large.

It's very unlikely one of these will be built. The most likely scenario is this two story cinder block blight now staying there for the foreseeable future.

Lol what is that based on. Granted I doubt anything that tall will be built here but there are a few ones going up in Chinatown on narrow lots like this. Something will happen one day. Until then it's hardly noticeable that this little cinder block building is there

And does anyone even know what the developer offered to the owner of this little building? It could've been something totally ridiculous

No residential would be allowed there, and you won't see the numbers work to do office space with such a tiny floorspace once you put in the core.

I know it has to be office at this point. Well I'm still going to hold onto the idea that something could be built there one day.

I am ignorant of the zoning for that site, but wouldn't it be feasible to have a thin building that is commercial on the lower couple floors and residential above like the Chapters building with Infinity rental apartments above it just one block to the north?

Plus there could be windows on the south facing side because of the set back on the new building (not ideal but it's something)

Don't we all view this city positively? It's just my fantasy, no matter how remote it may be, lol!
