From the Burnside News;

Aerotech – Site work is more or less complete now and construction will soon begin on a new multi-tenant cargo building for the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Located next door to the Aerotech Business Park, the new 40,000 square foot facility features office space for several tenants and 8,000 square feet of dedicated space for temperature controlled cargo. This is the largest facility of its kind at any airport in Atlantic Canada.

Moving Sidewalks!

September 23, 2009

Nova Scotia’s First Moving Sidewalks Now Open at Halifax Stanfield

Halifax, N.S. – Travellers using the new airport Parkade at Halifax Stanfield International Airport now have an even more convenient connection to the terminal building. Nova Scotia’s first moving sidewalks are now operating, carrying passengers through the over-road pedway between the Parkade and the terminal building.

“This modern addition to our facility provides easier and faster access to and from our Parkade,” says Tom Ruth, HIAA President & CEO. “Travellers, especially those with mobility issues, now have a higher level of service at the airport,” he adds.

The moving sidewalks extend from the P2 level of the 2,300-space Parkade to the second level of the terminal building. From there, travellers can use elevators and escalators down to the main lobby and ticket counter areas.

The Parkade offers a covered facility that is conveniently located, connected to the terminal building. Travellers selecting the Parkade have a variety of payment methods to choose from, including credit card express, cash or debit card, or pay-on-foot at ticket stations located at the Parkade entrances. For added customer convenience, the exit pay plaza is staffed 24/7.

Just over a year ago, Nova Scotia’s first escalators were decommissioned to make way for the new elevators and escalators in the airport’s main lobby.

“We are very pleased to continue our tradition of firsts at Halifax Stanfield International Airport,” says Ruth. “Many Nova Scotians had their first escalator ride at the airport, now travellers will experience the province’s first moving sidewalks here as well,” he says.

Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport is Atlantic Canada’s gateway to the world. It is the region’s principal full-service airport providing passengers and cargo clients with access to markets across the country, the United States and Europe, and the only airport in Atlantic Canada to offer U.S. preclearance, and Canada Customs services on a 24 hour, seven day a week basis. The Airport is a major economic, fiscal and employment generator valued at over $1.2 billion to the provincial economy, welcomes over 3.5 million passengers annually, and is an internationally recognized leader in customer service, having received first place awards in the global Airport Service Quality program for the past six years.

I also noticed they had the upper departures road shutdown the other day for installation of the over hanging facade for the domestic departures which will make the terminal look modern and uniform from end to end.

Thanks yeah, it looks great, better than I had expected. I wonder how the design of the hotel will fit into everything.

I was at the airport yesterday, and I have to say its looking great.
Inside, the barriers are beginning to come down and the giant window overlooking in front of the terminal is becoming more and more visible. It shouldnt be much longer before this improvement is complete.

I love that 3rd pic. Halifax has finally at least caught up with the late 20th century and has an airport that we can be proud of.

Very nice pictures. Feel like sharing them on wikipedia? The only exterior shots there are, well, not flattering.

The new aesthetics are so much better.

Great idea Phalanx, I just removed that first photo you listed from the airports wikipedia page since its ugly and really outdated.

Done - I want to go back when A) it's sunny out B) construction is done and there isn't machinery strewn about.

I wish I had taken some photos of the interior. It's nice, a second-floor walkway at the main hall (food court and fountain area) where the new escalators are extends parallel to the road through to the arrivals hall, so I guess that weird corridor with the arcade machines will be opened up over two stories.

I saw an ad on a city bus yesterday, and though I only caught a glimpse, I think it said that digital billboards were going to be installed at the airport. Does anybody know if theres any truth to this?

Airport adds walkway for U.S. check-ins

Travellers using the new parkade at Halifax Stanfield International Airport now have a direct route to check-in counters for non-stop flights to American destinations.

A new second-level walkway that connects the enclosed parkade pedway to the U.S. preclearance area is now open. The walkway extends from the second level of the terminal building, above the main lobby, to the U.S. preclearance check-in counters.

As well, renovations have been made to the main level corridor. A floor-to-ceiling glass wall along the roadway side of the terminal building provides a modern look with lots of natural light using energy-efficient glazing. New space along the corridor will soon feature new shops and services.

"Straightforward, intuitive passenger flow improvements like this help lower stress levels for travellers and enhance their overall travel experience," Michael Healy, the airport authority’s vice-president of infrastructure and technology, said in a release.

"Not only is this area more visually pleasing, we will soon be able to offer travellers more retail choices," he said.

More good news for the airport. The amount of improvements made over the past few years has been amazing. Before the airport looked fairly dated, but now its really something to be proud of.

I was there today and it all looks pretty good, however I was disappointed that the moving sidewalk for whatever reason was turned off.

I wonder if the Heritage Trust filed an appeal...

Elizabeth Pacey: "...and moving sidewalks will lead to higher crime levels and both physical and moral decay among our young people..."

Outdoor billboards take off at airport

Halifax International Airport Authority is finally going high-tech for advertisers wanting to get their message out to the millions of people who visit the airport.

The authority will soon sign a contract with Pattison Outdoor Advertising to provide advertising space on a variety of outdoor display billboards. Two of the billboards will be digital.

"Pattison has been getting into the digital age for the past year or more, so we thought this would be a prime opportunity to start at the airport with two . . . digital boards," Sherry Kirwin, Pattison’s general manager in the Maritimes, said Wednesday.

Ms. Kirwin said the boards are the latest technology. The outdoor boards will have a nine-advertiser rotation, with each advertiser getting their message displayed six seconds at a time or once every minute.

The digital display boards are scheduled to be operating by Dec. 1.

Ms. Kirwin said Pattison will also offer other advertising opportunities, including possible wall murals on the airport’s new parkade as well as some standard airport billboards.
