SOooooooo V-Fest VANCOUVER has been canceled this year!

Virgin has stated "...for various reasons we weren't able to create the line-up and experience that music lovers in Vancouver deserve. So rather than put on a sub standard show we have decided to take a break this year."

This is pretty sad as I wouldn't really call the Vancouver line-up sub-standard....if that is what they are thinking then I wonder why they haven't
canceled our show. LOL

One of my fave things about the Vancouver show is that they have the Bacardi B-Live Stage that features DJs and not just any DJ's but some really really good ones...
Hernan Cattaneo
Luke Fair
Desyn Masiello
Mstrkrft
...just to name a few

As for the Lineup here are some:
My chemical Romance
Billy Talent
Rise Against
The Look
The Killers
AFI
Metric
You say Party! We say Die!

..I mena there is a lot of local and up and coming talent but that seems to have always been the V-Fest MO!

Perhaps some of those acts will make it out to the Calgary show then?

Vancouvers show was scheduled for May 20 and 21. Keep in mind that is a Tuesday and Wednesday...this may have been the biggest problem.

I mean it's a work day AND for HS kids it is a school day....not that they wouldn't skip...

It would be great if some of those acts could do the Calgary show!

Prog Power should come to Canada, that's probably the only festival that I could get truly excited for. Unfortunately it's only in Europe, and Charlotte, NC. I would cream myself if Canada had even a fraction of the metal shows that Europe gets, that Waken show sounds friggin ridiculous.

Sled Island, the local fest, has just put Virgin to absolute shame. Just to name a small hand full of the lineup:

Apostle of Hustle, Broken Social Scene, Chad Vangaalen, Grizzly Bear, RZA, and then it gets legendary... Yo la Tengo (probably one of Indie Rock's 3 greatest bands ever) Wire and motherfucking Mogwai.

Sled Island is going to be as big as NXNE. You read it here first.

With the way it's grown since its inception, that wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Just looking at the whole lineup on their website... I am supremely jealous. Edmonton needs something like this. I hope to make it down if I can. I keep missing Chad Van Gaalen when he returns to Alberta.

Not to be a sheep, but I'm pretty sure Virgin isn't worried about the competition from an indie music festival. Kinda different audiences.

Well, unless the Hip and STP aren't cool anymore (I wish). I can't really keep up.

I voted with my wallet and decided to support the local festival rather than the festival put on by the multi-national conglomorate. It has a much better line up anyhow.

^^Shouldn't that be a no-brainer anyway from a guy who uses a Pavement album as his handle?

Yo la Tengo!

Iron Maiden rocks 'Dome in nostalgia-fuelled show
Heath McCoy, Calgary Herald
Published: Friday, June 06, 2008

Iron Maiden performed a sold out show Thursday at Pengrowth Saddledome.

Attendance: 13,000

- - -

Winston Churchill's historical "We shall never surrender" speech echoed through the 'Dome, followed by an explosion of fireworks.

Then came the heavy metal. The furious gallop of the rhythm section; the triple-axe attack of the guitarists; that air raid siren voice of singer Bruce Dickinson, who bounded across the stage like a dynamo.

That infectious energy, coupled with a comic book-ish stage set that brought futuristic cyborgs into ancient Egypt via a certain band's ghoulish mascot, might have led fans to believe they were dreaming about an Iron Maiden concert, circa the mid-'80s.

Not so. This is 2008 and these icons of British heavy metal were revisiting their classic era for a new generation of headbangers, as well as several thousand diehards who never stopped loving the band.

The truth is, Iron Maiden never went away.

Sure, Dickinson split for awhile in the '90s and the group soldiered on with another vocalist. But he's been back for nearly a decade and the band's been doing better than fine.

But the fans know when Maiden was at its peak -- and Maiden knows it too, judging by Thursday night's nostalgia trip. And what a mad-fun trip it was.

Following an opening set by Lauren Harris, daughter of Maiden bassist Steve Harris -- whose look and sound felt a lot like a Lee Aaron flashback (meaning not awesome) -- Iron Maiden launched into a show that was positively savage.

Bloodthirsty, war-torn classics like Aces High, Two Minutes To Midnight and The Trooper were paired with the fire-and-brimstone likes of Revelations and Number of The Beast.

Metal epics Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Powerslave were fun too, with pyro blazing to the rafters and Dickinson donning that silly chicken-hawk mask he wore back in the day.

Other highlights included the crazy-catchy Wasted Years and the frenzied history lesson Run To The Hills, about Europe's invasion of the New World, still the most powerful song in Maiden's canon.

The show had a few minor lulls with questionable choices by Maiden as to what exactly belongs on a list of their finest tunes.

I'd argue Heaven Can Wait doesn't, nor does The Clairvoyant, which was part of the band's encore at press time.

But as Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel once said: "That's just nit-pickin,' in't?"

The bottom line?

Thursday night at a packed 'Dome, Iron Maiden lived up to its reputation as the ultimate in pure, testosterone-pumping heavy metal kicks.

Thanks to frinkprof for having that ticket handy. It was fun going to the show with your buddies. Good times!

Some little extra tidbits was the crowd singing a loud happy birthday for Nicko near the end, and Bruce informing the crowd that Maiden will be back with a new album by the end of the year.

Virgin festival preps for first Calgary show, moves on from past problems
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

at 14:23 on June 11, 2008, EDT.
By Sean Patrick Sullivan, THE CANADIAN PRESS

VANCOUVER - Virgin Festival organizers are promising a successful event in Calgary this month despite a series of problems that have plagued the festival in other Canadian cities.

Two years after Sir Richard Branson, eccentric billionaire and Virgin Group founder, launched the inaugural Canadian Virgin Festival in Toronto, Calgary is set to host its first V-Fest on June 21-22 with headliners Stone Temple Pilots and the Tragically Hip.

But what was to have been Virgin's second Vancouver V-Fest went out with a whimper earlier this year when organizers pulled the plug, saying they couldn't secure top acts to anchor the two-day 2008 outdoor festival.

That was despite a glut of artists passing through Vancouver this summer, fuelled by a decline in CD sales and an increasing reliance on touring to pay the bills.

"You'll be hard pressed to see another year like this," says Andrew Bridge, director of Virgin Festivals in Canada, of a summer touring season that includes rock stalwarts such as R.E.M., Radiohead, Jack Johnson, Judas Priest and Oasis.

But that sort of saturated market, along with conflicting schedules and creative differences, meant organizers couldn't land the acts they needed for Vancouver, Bridge says.

These two-day rock festivals, which are typically accompanied by hour-long sets by dozens of bands with local art vendors and goofy events in sun-drenched fields, are all about finding the right mix of talent and venue, he says.

All of the "magic pieces of the puzzle" came together in Calgary, Bridge says.

"When we looked at all the markets in Canada, we saw this market that has the highest percentage of youth, we found a great venue in Fort Calgary, and we had some artists who were interested in performing in the market," Bridge says.

"We decided to say goodbye to Vancouver this year with the hopes that we'll be back next year."

Two names they wanted on the bill - Radiohead and Jack Johnson - have already sold out their own shows in Vancouver's Thunderbird Stadium at the University of British Columbia.

Aaron Brophy, managing editor of Chart music magazine, says the corporate sponsorship may be a deterrent for a band like Radiohead, which spurned the big-label record industry by offering its latest album on a pay-what-you'd-like basis online.

"They don't need that extra push that a cellphone company-sponsored festival will provide for them. If Jack Johnson doesn't need Virgin's name attached to create the environment he wants, he's not going to do it."

Indeed, it's squabbles over creative control - and a lack of interest from concertgoers killing time as they wait for their favourite act - that are among the reasons why some bands don't play festivals, Bridge says.

There's also the open-air aspect, which can be a draw for some and a disincentive for others. A plus for many bands, he says, is the draw of playing with a diverse roster of talent.

"The music community is a big community; they like to get together with their compadres in the industry and have some fun at the festival," Bridge says.

Open-air festivals can be a gamble, and problems with weather and clean toilets can put a black mark on even the best planned festival, says Brophy of Chart.

During the first Toronto V-Fest in 2006, noise bylaws meant the Saturday night headliner, Flaming Lips, was rushed off stage after performing only four songs. Sunday's scheduled headliner, British band Massive Attack, was unable to even make it into Canada - festival organizers blamed immigration problems.

And organizers kept their "rain or shine" promise for Vancouver's 2007 show, as thousands of underdressed teenagers packed the open-air Thunderbird Stadium amidst a heavy downpour.

Despite the struggles, it's full steam ahead for V-Fest in Calgary and Toronto, which sees Foo Fighters and Oasis headline the third incarnation of the festival Sept. 6-7.

Bridge says it was a "tough go" for Virgin in its first year as it struggled to build the credibility necessary to attract top-name acts.

These days, the festival's biggest challenge for expanding is economics. Cities in many parts of the country, for example, don't have the population density of the Toronto area.

But Bridge suggests Virgin will soon use its market power to establish festivals in the more far-flung regions of Canada: "Those markets are definitely on our radar screen."

Screw Virgin, Sam Roberts is playing the Folk Fest this year.

Now, someone snag Mobile after they get some more material, and Canadian music can be saved.

Seriously - the Hip? That was cool and edgy in 1993, Richard. Now they're just another Anne Murray.

Oh, and Tengo. More Tengo.
