I hope Meridian either dies a quick death (but unfortunately, with an economic boom on....) or gets ripped by the EDC! Jee-zus, that thing is an ABOMINATION!

As for the former gas station lot on Jasper and 116th, it's possible that it might not stay empty for too long, but I don't know how long at least it's to stay empty to allow for decontamination. I know an environmental engineer who might know, though. Like Cold, I'd love to see something like a mixed commercial/residential use there - basically 1-2 storey podium with retail/resto/bars and a condo tower on top.

you would think they'd throw up a nice condo building on jasper & 116th. I think you might be able to have some river valley view looking south, not sure at what height though, still a nice location though!

Yeah seriously. Even though the thing would have been monstrous, its nice to know people used to have grand visions for Edmonton. I wonder where all the risk-takers are at now-a-days?

there is a "MEXICO" spa on jasper in front of Telus. Basically a hot tub or something with people inside in swimwear.

I hope they do that - I live just a block away from that intersection, meaning that I have to see that damned eyesore of an empty lot every day!

Meridian is on 111st north of jasper just behind "servus"

as for alta 2 or venetian - i think venetian is 75% sold or so...and they were in the $350sqft.

Alta 2 not sure on sales, but i think $350 sqft or so too.

Im betting we see $400sqft in spring.

EDC shouldn't have to be the only voice, especially if a project has already received tacit approval from other groups.

For example, how would a pig like this even get through Planning in the first place?

if it meets zoning...there isnt much planning can do...even the DO.

Another name for the CN Pylon that was proposed? I have no idea. Emporis has no info on it... so, i don't know.

Bingo, the bylaws dictate what the Planning Dept and DO's can or cannot control. Plain n' simple. The EDC was created to assist these departments by being a mechanism to help enforce better design.

I think it's safe to say that the Meridian would have been punted by the EDC given the fact that they have referred the Altavista 2, The Uptown, 105 and 104 Ave condo, etc.

Not necessarily... after Devonian lures a tenant, then you'll likely hear the landlord market complain as they then have to deal with the backfilling of the space vacated by the tenant that moved to Devonian, which will rent for pennies on the dollar versus new construction.

Not necessarily... after Devonian lures a tenant, then you'll likely hear the landlord market complain as they then have to deal with the lack of continuous space in the market. Hence why Procura, Oxford, Dundee, GWL, ASPEN, and MORGUARD all announce 40 storey towers within 2 weeks.

How about even 1 of the developers you mentioned making an announcement. My guess is its Dundee - as that would likely be "Epcor" as a prime tenant and the City controls Epcor - and would have to wait to for Mandel to be there for his big announcement?

But what about Qualico, Melcor or a local consortium?? They at least may share the spotlight with Mandel - while firms out of the area may not give a tinkers damn about sharing a spotlight with Mandel. When is he back in town??????

Remember Oxford? 240glt, one of those new forum members, was saying something about a 24-32 storey tower by Oxford in that parking lot between the Bell tower and the Greyhound Station. However, I must stress that he was speculating at that.

Isn't Mandel on a trip to China or something?? I remember seeing in the Journal about a litle teaser in an article stating that he's probably got a couple of big announcements to make when he gets back.

Better hope it's way better than what Reimer came up with when she made a trip to Taiwan/China once years ago!

(don't ask me if I remember exactly what, but I remember that it was disappointing compared to to other mayors did on their overseas biz trips to promote their cities!)
