A new arena is not planned for the Olympics bid, unless there's some very new news. Everything I've read about the bid is that no new venues would need to be built to host the games, and that's part of why SLC is a favorite.

According to NBC Sports: "The Salt Lake City plan has called for using 100 percent existing venues, thanks in large part to hosting the 2002 Winter Games, the last time that the U.S. put forth a Winter Olympic bid."

So I assume an NHL arena could help us with our Olympics bid as it'll be perfect to host the hockey finals, and may receive some public funds, as it'll be better for hockey competition to have it plus Maverik Center as the two main venues. The Delta Center was only used for ice dancing and some speed skating. But as far as the official bid is concerned, a new arena is not part of it.

I had an entire post about how the Ritchie Group's West Quarter (or whatever project) showing the Jazz offices/practice facility may indicate Ryan's investment in downtown. I knew they had walked it back but didn't know the extent of it. I thought it was maybe one of those, "oops we let the cat out of the bag before the final details were known..." but then I read Andy Larson's article from the Tribune after posting and saw where it was pretty emphatic (the Ritchie Group reached out to Smith to gauge his interest in partnering with the development and drew up these mocks for it - and he flat-out said he wasn't interested).

Really, Smith's reaction in that article wasn't that off of what happened with the MLB stadium. Remember, Salt Lake initially reached out to Smith to gauge his interest and he basically ended up ghosting the mayor.

Not going to lie, these stories make me think Smith has zero interest investing in Salt Lake and is just biding his time before bailing. I hope not...but I guess we'll see. I'm curious to hear his comments in a couple months when the Viv officially flips back to the Delta Center. Would be a good opportunity to reaffirm his investment in the area.

I think we are the logical choice. We have a better venue ready to go, they could stay in the same division, keep the same name, logo and branding and it would make sense for our market. If they want to leave Arizona and stay in the west, there aren't many possible alternatives that don't already have a team. At least not outside of Texas, but I feel like Utah would be a better fit.

Maybe the Yotes leave AZ, maybe they don't but there's a lot to consider.

1. The team/owner has access to a very lucrative and rare sports betting license in Arizona, the state ranked 6th in sports wagering totals last year, right behind Nevada. This would be giving up a ton in future earnings for the Meruelo family to just walk away from.

2. The PHX metro area has a hockey specific arena built in 2003 which the Coyotes terminated the lease on 2-years ago. The Delta Center is not newer or more specific to hockey than what happens to be already available in the Phoenix market.

3. The D'Baks are in the process of development new/renovation stadium plans and the owners have not shot down the idea of pairing with the Yotes on an entertainment district in the downtown area.

4. The PHX metro area is now 10th largest in the US; the state is 14th largest and growing by 100K people per year. There's millions of reasons hockey wants to remain here.

5. A NHL specific arena will be needed in SLC or wherever else the Coyotes will go. What ready plan, which has passed a public vote, exists for SLC right now? And since there isn't one why would they move to SLC to face the same uncertainty in an even smaller market?

6. The Coyotes are in the Central Division of the Western conference, with teams like Chicago and St. Louis. That means a HUGE part of the country works just fine for the team to remain in the same division.

Project description (from developer):
BCG Arc Fund, Volunteers of America Utah, and Giv Development have partnered to redevelop an existing medical complex, located at 1060 E 100 S, to an 88-unit LIHTC multi-family property. The project has already been allocated tax credit funding, Olene Walker funding, and received a low-interest loan from Salt Lake City. Letters of commitment are all attached on the application. The existing use is a non-conforming commercial medical building and surface parking lot. The project will be utilizing the current underground parking structure for all required residential parking and converting the majority of the surface parking to open outdoor amenity space. Due to the high cost of land in this neighborhood, the only financially viable way to provide affordable housing at this location is by increasing the number of residential units to the 88 that are proposed.

The proposed use is a conforming residential multi-family use that will utilize the existing footprint of the building. The applicant is requesting an increase to the allowable density on the property to convert the non-conforming structure to affordable housing. In addition, the project is requesting an additional height of 5 feet for the screening of mechanical equipment. 100% of the newly created housing units will be affordable at, or below, 50% AMI. Precedence already exists allowing higher density across the street from this proposed development.

Will be glad to see that one begin construction. There are two or three around the corner on 700 East that I'm looking forward to beginning construction. I just wish that someone with the financial wherewithal would develop that parking lot south of Trolley Sq., and do it with an authentic vintage flare. I'm dubious that as reported the current owner is too busy. At least that's what he claims. I think he just doesn't have the financial means to do it.

I guess I thought that was the Moda Luxe because of it's location, but whatever this is seems to be just south of where the Moda Luxe will be. Right?

If it were the Moda Luxe I would be shocked that no one was shouting about it with multiple posts. That would be a major change of many recent predictions of its demise. Hmm, I'm totally in the dark Reeder. Blah, Schmoe, Atlas, anyone have the details on that?

It's the new State Liquor Store - without the massive parking structure. It's just west of Ken Sanders and The Green Ant.
