Exploring local creeks quite a bit lately. Cute little pedestrian bridge over a stream that I'm sure was done by a volunteer. And there appears to be the wreckage of a 70s car. Maybe even 60s?

This is right behind a subdivision. Can only guess at what happened. Back when the land was farm land/crown land with nothing around, perhaps someone went offroading at night and dropped down into the valley. Or, the car was wrecked already and some kids pushed it downhill. As to why so much of it is stripped, I guess people been pulling pieces off from time to time over the decades. Though I'm surprised the steering wheel is still there.

Not much left of it to be sure. I have the same guess as you - the steering wheel looks like it could be 1960s (no "safety" padding at the hub/spokes), but the seat belt retractor could be 1970s. So ???

I've heard over the years that sometimes farmers would just leave their old cars out in the field after they were finished with them. If there was a bank at the end of the field they would push them over the bank - out of sight out of mind I suppose. Environmental regulations were virtually nonexistent, so it was pretty fast and loose for the most part. That's my guess as to the fate of this one.

Or... young guys used to get old cars for cheap and drive them offroad until the cars expired or got stuck to the point that they couldn't get them out, for kicks. Often alcohol was involved. Could be that too.

We're now under a winter storm watch.

Quote:
A prolonged winter storm is possible.

Total snowfall: 30 to 50 cm over several days. Locally higher amounts possible.

Maximum wind gusts: northerly 80 km/h.

Locations: southeastern, eastern, and northeastern Newfoundland.

Time span: Wednesday morning into Friday.

Remarks: The heaviest snowfall is expected Wednesday and Wednesday night.

For the Avalon peninsula, the snow may mix with or change to rain for part of the day on Wednesday which would significantly impact snowfall accumulations. Precipitation for all other areas will likely remain as snow.

The snow will be accompanied by strong northerly winds which could cause poor visibility and hazardous travel conditions in blowing snow.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.

Winter storm watches are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #NLwx.

+1C and partly cloudy in Moncton at 8 AM. Temperatures will remain relatively steady during the day.

Nor'easter tomorrow night. A nothingburger for Moncton (1-2 cm), but, Halifax can expect 20-30 cm, with wind and blowing snow, There will be wraparound snow squalls in eastern NS and Cape Breton following the storm, so snow accumulations there could end up being 50 cm or so. This on top of the 150 cm they got last week.

Yikes! 30 - 50 cm isn't so great. 80 km/h winds should cause some spectacular drifts!

A few friends took me out for lunch. Hitched a ride. First time on the crosstown arterial in months I forgot how hideous but fun and curvy it is.

It is currently 4.6 and partly sunny, this morning's low was -1.8. We'll be dipping below freezing overnight for the next couple weeks, meaning the weather is going to be normal for once.

Here's a nice map of the Great Lakes snow belt areas. I had to take a screenshot from a video on the Weather Network app. With colder temperatures and lots of open water, there could be some big snow events in the next couple weeks.

I suppose because it's Valentine's Day the stakes are higher, but a lot of restaurants, etc., have already announced they're closed Wednesday. It's the earliest I've ever seen snow day announcements before. It doesn't arrive until Wednesday morning.

The warmspot was White Rock, BC at 13.1C

Warmest low was Cape St James, BC at 5.8C.

Winter storm watch is now a winter storm and storm surge warning.

Quote:
Heavy snowfall with blowing snow is expected.

Locations: the northern Avalon Peninsula, eastern, and northeastern Newfoundland.

Total snowfall: 30 to 50 cm, locally higher amounts possible.

Maximum wind gusts: northeasterly 80 km/h.

Time span: Wednesday morning until early Friday morning, with the heaviest snow expected Wednesday and Wednesday night.

Similar storms in the past have caused:
- hazardous driving conditions
- school closures and cancellations of scheduled activities
- disruptions to public services

Remarks: Conditions will deteriorate quickly Wednesday morning as accumulating snow occurs in conjunction with strengthening winds.

Snowfall rates of 2 to 3 centimetres per hour are possible before gradually diminishing in intensity on Thursday. However, a stiff northwesterly flow and continued snowfall will continue to cause poor conditions.

As with all nor'easters, a small change in the forecast track results in large changes in the snowfall forecast. This alert represents the current most probable scenario based on the latest forecast guidance and analysis. This alert and corresponding local forecasts will be updated regularly with the latest guidance and analysis by Environment Canada meteorologists.

Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #NLwx.
Quote:
Impacts from storm surge are expected, including coastal flooding, beach erosion, minor infrastructure damage, spread of coastal debris, and localized coastal road washouts.

Locations: Cape Spear to Deadman's Bay, especially northeast-facing shorelines.

Maximum Water Levels: exceeding high astronomical tide, with water inundating vulnerable sections of coastline.

Maximum wave heights: 8 to 10 metres, breaking upon approach to shore.

Time span: Wednesday night. Worst near high tide.

High tide: 11 P.M. Wednesday to 1 A.M Thursday.

Storm surge warnings are issued when water levels pose a threat to coastal regions.
Still lovely for now.

I'm starting to suspect there's a chance of a five-day weekend, or at least Wednesday and Thursday both fully snow days.

Forecast isn't changing much but the certainty that St. John's is in the bullseye and doesn't transition to rain keeps getting stronger.

-2C and partly cloudy in Moncton at 11 AM.

Best guess with the upcoming storm is that Moncton will get a paltry 2 cm in flurry activity, but, it will be windy so we will have some blowing and drifting snow.

This is a coastal storm. Pray for Halifax, Cape Breton and the Avalon.

Meanwhile, in Moncton, generally considered one of the snowier places in Canada:

Where is winter?

I feel like we've been dodging them, matrix-like, this year. How long will our luck hold?

Indeed. The storm track has always been to the north of us, or to the south this winter. We haven't had a decent blizzard all winter. I can't recall more than about 10 cm of snow on the ground at any one time.
