Wow! Halifax’s total so far this storm (at least for the airport)

Friday 14.2cm
Saturday 31.2cm
Sunday 38.6cm

For a total of 84cm!

Is this bigger than White Juan?

Either way these must be among the largest in day totals and storm totals ever there.

What an odd, relatively out of nowhere, event.

Our special weather statement has ended All that hype and we're getting drizzle, maybe 2-4cm on Tuesday.

Edit: Lots of school delayed openings in the West Coast and in Central.

Yesterday was beautiful, calm and sunny with a high of 8.1. I kept thinking it was summer glancing out the window and catching a bit of grass and bright sun

It's inevitable that the comparisons are there, as it has certainly been a big one. It will probably be a day or two before the full effects are known, especially in eastern NS and Cape Breton, who got absolutely hammered. I'm sure for them it will be bigger than White Juan (much bigger, I suspect).

I can't speak for anyone else in the city, but for my place, White Juan dumped more snow and the drifting was insane. I am still in the same place I was then, and when it was done, WJ had covered the cars up to the windshield. It took two days for our street to be cleared (I am on a low priority street - the main roads were opened much sooner), and in the meantime I had shoveled out the driveway up to the street, where I was facing a wall of snow approx 4 - 5 ft.

This storm, in comparison, had a lot of drifting snow, but much less in total (for me), and the winds weren't as strong either, so the drifting wasn't as severe.

The storm duration was much longer as well, and the gradual accumulation of snow gave crews a chance to keep things clear, so locally the roads stayed open (though I saw on Google Maps that Cobequid pass was closed for a while yesterday, and I'm sure Cape Breton is probably at a standstill). My little street was cleared twice over the weekend, and there's not enough accumulation to prevent anybody from getting out. Also, I was able to shovel out the driveway twice (and have to do it again), whereas WJ happened too quickly and the winds were too severe to allow shoveling during the storm. That said, yesterday the snow being blown into my face while shoveling wasn't a pleasure... had to turn my back to it whenever possible. Speaking of my back... it's not feeling the best today...

This was posted on facebook yesterday morning by a local meteorologist (for CTV). There was still a complete day of snowfall yet to come, so a complete comparison couldn't be made yet.

The go to comparison for many is White Juan in 2004. We are certainly in the ballpark (or more) of total amounts of snow in comparison to that storm. It should be noted that some unofficial snow reports from White Juan ran 100 to 150 cm.
There are of course some significant differences between the two storm systems. White Juan more intense but this one a much longer duration. Wind was much stronger for some areas with White Juan and contributed to more power outages.
More snow to come this evening, tonight, and Monday. For most areas though the snow is expected to be more intermittent and lighter tomorrow.
One thing to keep in mind for Monday is the north wind will still be gusting 30 to 60 km/h. That means that blowing and drifting snow will still be around. That could still reduce visibility at times even if the snow rates have let up. Previously cleared surfaces could also be covered back in.

Now if you could truck some of that Snow out west we should be good. Did get a few cm of snow last night. But very little here at all. Was out in Elk Island National Park yesterday, and other than snow and ice in the deep bush there was nothing.

Couple of chickadees appear to be building a nest as they keep going back and forth. They used this same birdhouse six years ago and my wife actually witnessed the babies flop onto the ground and stumble around until they figured out how to fly away. Couple years later they started building again but didn’t end up using it.

Not many posts on the Halifax threads today. I guess they're all out shoveling snow. He he he. In Lisbon today it's been a mixed sky from clear blue to marine layer and high thin clouds. The high was 18. A beautiful day to be out walking.

We got a solid 5cm last night and this morning so your photo from Elk Island would be a lot different today.

Exact! I now have no words left to describe the beauty of your images and your snowy stories. I would add that here in Europe this year's winter is the mildest and least snowy for decades and decades

Very creative arrangement of photos from yesterday McMinsen. This one really stands out to me - lovely.

The plums trees are popping in Victoria withView street seems to be the street that blooms a bit ahead of the rest, perhaps it’s protected by the relatively high residential buildings along its length. Good thing as it’s a rather blah street, although improving gradually with each new development. What would really help would be widening the sidewalks. Anyways, a couple pics from this weekend from others on Facebook:

The first by Angela Gabaldon, a local photgrapher/artist who cycles around town and takes pics of her bike in various locations. Quite the character

Next by Doug Clement - https://www.facebook.com/DougClementPhotography

1C and sunny today. Beautiful winter day. Forecast was for -5 and sun so they completely missed it temperature wise.

Low of -10C (wind chill -12) this morning. That is what a clear night will do but we were able to warm up decently during the day.

Forecast calls for -3C (upgraded from -5C earlier) tomorrow. Let's see if they learned their lesson, I have a feeling it might be closer to zero yet again.

We still have relatively little snow. All our snow cover fell during a 10 days stretch between Jan 6-16th.
Last day with over 1 cm precipitation was January 20th. I think with the mild stretch coming, we might see some patches of grass appearing.

The warmspot was Squamish, BC at 10.6C.

Warmest low was Race Rocks and Sheringham Point, BC at 6.1C.
