Interesting.. the only other empty space on ground level (besides the corner) is a weird layout.. the ground floor space is small.. and there's a staircase at the back to the 2nd floor. Doesn't look suitable for a restaurant.. but who knows? There's also the 2nd floor 'restaurant' space.. though I think this was intended for a large restaurant to replace what was there before (Original Joes)...

Only in this weird weird world of ours of today that people actually think the mass closure of a chain buisiness is actually a good thing. Oh well, anything to keep the stocks going right? Can't afford a collapse either. Speculation is everything. Reality isn't.

I bought Starbucks after people panicked in 2008 when they closed more stores than they opened for a quarter. Never looked back.

Your buzzwords notwithstanding, I'm sure they know what they are doing.

Could that be for the Jollibee's?
I think they have a fast food counter service format. It could be like the old Burger King at Granville and Robson with seating upstairs from the service counter (assuming there is space for a kitchen at grade).

Just looking at the floor plans here..
https://vancouver.ca/files/cov/510-w-bro...it-staff-committee-report-appendix-c.pdf

That space is indicated at 1860 SF.. quite large.. I don't see the staircase at the back.. weird.

There's also another space on the Cambie side I wasn't aware of.. 882 SF.

The restaurant space on the 2nd floor is 4812 SF.

Ron.

Well as announced back in 2020, they will be closing 800 locations in the USA and Canada and will be opening 850 new locations in the USA and Canada. So there is a gain of 50 stores.

https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.com/financing/starbucks-will-close-another-100-us-locations

Maybe as a suburbanite I get to see them differently, the starbucks with a drive thru on 152 near Guildford mall is pretty much non stop busy whenever I go there, if its nice out all the outdoor tables are in use. Same goes for the Coquitlam on Lougheed location, the drive-thru is always busy, sometimes the lineup is into the superstore parking, they had to reconfigure how to enter the drive thru cause it gets so backed up.

They certainly aren't hurting in the suburbs.

Thanks.
Yeah, the upstairs looks too big.
The Jollibee's on Granville is in a skinny buildng by comparison.

I think the restaurant space was still available for lease. I think the bank had two of the middle units (it's labeled on the development permit application)

That is very weird. That might mean that the closure is temporary or that something with the landlord prevented them from closing normally. Some of the Indigo Starbucks closures are temporary, if not all, from what I have heard.

Starbucks target market has moved out to the suburbs, so that helps. Also, Starbucks offering a drive-thru does not take away any of their existing market but it adds those who might normally stop at Tim Hortons or McDonald's for their morning coffee because of the convenience.

But they ripped off all the signage in front of the store so it doesn't seem temporary.

OK, I suppose it is more of a lack of choice that is making suburbanites go get their coffee fix at Starbucks then. Certainly city centre folks are shunning the chain, and that explains why it isn't profitable for Starbucks to be in urban centres compared to years before.

I have to say they are good at manipulation and marketing. Stock-buybacks and their intense marketing have certainly spurred their stocks higher, despite a 30% profit dip in 2020 compared to previous years. Blame it on the pandemic or people changing tastes, but it is still amazing how their stock climb defies gravity. I got to take my hat off to that.

You are chatting with people who work in these industries. When they tell you that you know pretty much nothing about what you are discussing, they aren’t speculating. You perceive this to be a “fight” of some sort, an argument to win, but it’s more akin to a child getting mad that they can’t stay up past their bedtime and the adults doing the best they can to manage that situation. You can protest and blather but it will never render your ideas realistic unless they are actually underpinned by reality. There are limits to what one can publicly reveal but I imagine that even if everything was you would continue on your way, much like an anti-vaxxer or a flat-earther.

Your passion for these topics could lead you to work in these areas. Perhaps then you would learn about the inner workings and then have something valuable to share.

We all discuss many things here, topics upon which we may have varying degrees of awareness. Getting it wrong is a natural part of that but obstinately clinging to every wrong idea, as if one possesses unfailing depth of insight, is another issue entirely.

Your persistent denial of reality across all topics is something to behold.

Yeah, a few companies had a tough year in 2020. I guess we'll never know why.

news 1130 tweeted that the skytrain station and the bus loop are closed as well and people are asked to avoid the area. Must be something big.

just saw the 5pm news, they said there was an active shooter and a threat of a pipe bomb. Video showed people running out of the mall, some screaming, the RCMP can be seen running into the mall with guns out, the area is still all shut down. They said there has been no pipe bomb confirmation yet. One guy interviewed said the alarm went off and they announced on the PA to evacuate the mall cause there had been shots fired and he hid in a backroom and finally made it outside.

As of 6pm, Metrotown Skytrain Station is opened again. However the mall will remain closed for the rest of today.
