Atlanta's already notorious for being in the top rankings for high income inequality - we don't need any skinny skyscrapers to mark that "accomplishment" with this "square floorplate" typology. Every single one of the new skinny skyscrapers going up in NYC tops the other in height/cost per SF when it comes to real estate in this country. That's something that you really don't want to happen here.

I am sure they will being involved with at least one of the bids. Many, including Mayor Reed, still see them as the front runner.

Serious question - Are skinny skyscrapers reserved solely for the rich?

I prefer leaner buildings because they block less light/sky.

The skinny skyscrapers in NYC are pretty much 1 unit per floor...MAYBE 2-4 units in some instances depending on the real estate- so every floor is being treated like a penthouse floorplan. You can't squeeze that many units onto a small floorplate and expect them to be even considered "market-rate" units. Building higher to accommodate more units is more of an exponential cost when it comes to providing for mechanical/electrical/plumbing needs for each of the units as well. It's just not economically sound for anyone unless you know you can get insane rents - which is why these towers are going up in an area of NYC being penned Billionaire's Row.

I'm very happy that they did this with the Ace Hardware store. No more concrete facades please!

I wouldn't write concrete off entirely but we got an awful lot of it for awhile and it looked more like a cost-cutting measure than a design decision. Fortunately it's easy to redo since it's just cosmetic.

It's basically a blank slate anyway... as tenants move in they make the spaces their own and variations get introduced. Even Skyhouse Midtown is getting some of that despite having some of the least desirable spaces around--those blue awnings are disappearing one by one. I think there will also be more of the complete renovations like the Viewpoint retail along Peachtree once there's a market for it.

So what is going into the build out? That would be a great place for a restaurant with outdoor seating and a place for a live band. Loca Luna would have been great there!

I took four or five photographs. These are the only two that looked good enough to share.

Still no signs up... I'm not sure if they even have a tenant yet. There was talk of it being a grocery store but I'm not so sure. It doesn't seem big enough for a Sprouts or Fresh Market and the Savi opening a few blocks away probably eliminates any chance of it being a specialty market.

A grocery store of any size is desperately needed, though, so I hope the old rumor is true

I thought it was Eviva that was trying to get a grocery store. I walk by that Viewpoint space everyday and it is too small, there is no way a grocer could fit in it. Maybe the small form factor whole foods they are doing now I think is branded 365.

Dekalb Farmer's Market

Over the past year I have watched the DFM develop and grade an enormous plot of land for a planned major expansion. However, I have not seen any particular details on this since the earlier announcement in 2014. Is there any update on this development?

It was reported that both were hoping to attract a grocery store. As mentioned above, the Viewpoint space is too small for anything but a Savi or something similar. The Eviva space was rumored to be designed for Publix's new urban store format but it would also be the right size for a Sprouts, Fresh Market, etc.

Yes in their current incarnation driven by incredibly expensive land prices in very large cities--

ATL awarded $30 million grant for development of Vine City, English ave and AUC.

U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro announced Monday Atlanta won a $30 million Choice grant. The initiative is part of a White House-led effort to improve communities through affordable mixed-income housing, youth services and partnerships with schools and private entities. The funding will be used to revitalize communities in west Atlanta, including Vine City, Ashview Heights and the Atlanta University Center Neighborhood.
“This represents our belief that we can collaborate with you to make a difference in this University Choice Neighborhood area,” said Castro. It’s not just about housing. It’s also about ensuring that we lift up overall quality of life, that there are educational opportunities, there is access to transit, that there is a safe neighborhood, that there are investments that define prosperity.”

It's still possible for Eviva to start October. A good sign is that the billboard has been blank black tarp for almost a month now

Wouldn't we have heard something by now? It's wouldn't just randomly break ground without any announcement, press conference, or anything like that right? Like jeez, are they still struggling with funding? It's been like 2 years now it feels like. The average project takes about 9-12 months from initial announcement to break ground if they secure the funding and permitting.
