The 5/6 is one route I can get behind converting to a streetcar, although dedicated lanes and serious stop consolidation would be required for my full support. The length and configuration of the route means that the demand is all local in nature and it has a pretty high demand as it is the two main thing that a streetcar service is actually helpful in serving.

I'd say it should be the first route to be automated

I don't reckon there are many people on this forum who do this, but to those who play music through their phone speaker on public transit, why?

Most of the time it's simply because there's no one in their life who has told them not to

For the same reason some people clip finger and toe nails on public transit?

I just got back from Toronto and had a chance to use their Presto card on my iPhone… what a game changer. No fumbling for where the transit card is… no worrying about losing your card. Instantly seeing how much money is on your card and how much the last trip cost.

What is holding Vancouver back from implementing that here anyone?

They need to upgrade all the backend systems to support it. 2022 it was a $216 million dollar budget item

Route 7
Nanaimo Station/Dunbar
5 km roundtrip to Musqueam Community Centre
Somewhat interesting that they'd consider this; AFAIK the only reserve that has Metro Vancouver (therefore Translink) membership is Tsawwassen. The Musqueam reserve is technically outside their jurisdiction. Have they requested this and will fund it, like Mission does with the WCE?

If they extend down Dunbar to 51st, the majority of the extension covers Vancouver streets and brings service to a publicly accessible golf course.

Once upon a time I was on my way home on the train and this lady across from me was just painting her nails. Before that I noticed some acrid smell, thought someone was smoking meth. Nope, some chick decided she had to paint her nails in a sealed up skytrain car.

Well sure but that's not the Translink plan. The map seems to show a route along Salish drive, not Dunbar.

TransLink is responsible for transportation planning and management in the whole of Metro Vancouver, which includes the Indian Reserves. The Burrard Peninsula Transit Plan study area "includes the traditional and unceded territories of several Indigenous Nations including kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem First Nation), q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen First Nation), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), and qiqéyt (Qayqayt First Nation)."

The Mayor's Council that is part of the TransLink management structure includes the Tsawwassen First Nation as a member because they ratified an urban First Nations Treaty in 2009.

The Musqueam Indian Band are still working towards a self governing treaty, and initialled the Musqueam Self-Government Agreement with the Canadian Government earlier this year.

Maybe to service redevelopment? They are just working through their new land use planning for the reserve.

You contradict yourself. The Musqueam reserve is federal land as it stands today and is not a member of Metro Vancouver. Translink does not plan for or service Squamish, Chilliwack, or Point Roberts because none of them are part of Metro Vancouver and only services Mission because they signed a separate service deal with the municipality. Perhaps this planning is done with the expectation that the Musqueam reserve will eventually join Metro Vancouver?

You should know by now that land acknowledgements don't imply anything.

For reference: The only Translink route that currently services a reserve is the 609 which was introduced in 2008 3 months before the Tsawwassen reserve joined Metro Vancouver. As part of their membership in Metro Vancouver, they collect property taxes for Translink. The Musqueam don't.

I was referring to Metro Vancouver the physical entity (Vancouver CMA). All TransLink service area maps show the Indian Reserves, and the Burrard Peninsula Transit Plan study area explicitly identifies the Musqueam IR as being included. Metro Vancouver (ex GVRD) confusingly uses the same name.

Fingers crossed that TPTB plan this one better than the River District.

TransLink Reconciliation
Report 2023
August 2024
Quote:
TransLink is committed to working with First Nation
communities to introduce and improve transportation
options for treaty and reserve lands within Metro
Vancouver. Feedback was received about the lack
of transportation services on First Nation reserves
and impacts of current service levels on treaty lands,
which further entrenched disparities and systemic
racism against their communities.
The First Nations Transportation Program
represents our commitment to introducing
transportation options to First Nation reserve lands
and improving service to treaty lands in support
of thriving and sustainable communities under a
shared understanding of reconciliation.

First Nations communities can benefit from
increased transportation options through:
• Easier transportation connections to and
within communities
• More affordable, sustainable, and
environmentally friendly transportation options
• Improved accessibility for people walking and
biking to access transportation services
• Greater access to job and social opportunities in
the region
• If requested, greater access for non-community
members to homes and/or businesses
• Incorporating First Nation-specific strategic
goals, official community plans, and future
visions
Working closely with First Nations, we are
developing the First Nation Transportation
Program together to support new service designs
and implementation processes. TransLink has
committed regional funding from the 2022
Investment Plan to begin delivering service based
on our community engagement. Engagement
activities include site visits, seeking information
on community transportation needs, potential
improvements to transit infrastructure (e.g.,
sidewalks, street lighting, and bus shelters), and
identifying funding opportunities with the ultimate
goal of increasing transportation access.

There's apparently a press conference happening tomorrow at 9:30am at Stadium-Chinatown unveiling the Mark V SkyTrain, and it'll go into service at Waterfront at 11am.
