Are we allowed to go *inside*? I was by there today and wanted to go in a take a picture of the globe thingy.

But they had mean looking security guards at the door, seemingly checking ID. Not the usual out of shape rent a cop, so I didn't bother...

I never noticed that they added "Canada Place" onto the side of Canada Place...must be part of the revitalization project.

Great pic, btw!

The fencing was being removed while I was there... I think they still have to spray it clean, he's kinda dirty. But here it is!

I didn't realize the foundation for the "Orca" is so small in size.
I wonder if the whole thing would tilt-over if someone leans on it.

There are signs on it saying "Don't Climb". I thought it was funny that it is necessary.

I'm also quite confident that it has underground supports, and is quite sturdy.

Supposedly the Orca will have a lighting feature, but it's not hooked up yet.

Yume, as usual, gorgeous pics.

We need more venues of the same or greater quality than the expanded convention centre. I'm part of a team trying to plan a large event in the city, and it's retardedly difficult to find not just quality venues that can win the bid but also venues that are also large enough.

Again, we need more attractions and institutions AND not just one type of it (like how some narrow minded and uptight people here in this forum would want us to maintain, and would then have the nerve to tell us to go to other cities for it) but attractions and institutions for a broad spectrum of interests and tastes and NOT JUST YOUR OWN. It's beyond sad if all you intend to do is focus on Vancouver's natural environment and recreation card......in summary: fascist tendencies.

In addition, these should be attractions, facilities, and institutions that we can be proud of not just on a local scale but also on a global scale AND that are also large in size.

I had my doubts earlier when the idea of a third convention centre expansion (as part of the transit hub development) was suggested so soon after our recent expansion, but now I think it's definitely a good idea to start planning the vision early...contrary to what some may think, the meeting and event business in the city has nowhere to go but up.

If it weren't for the new convention centre and some Olympic venues and related infrastructure, we wouldn't be looking at bidding for this event - this city simply wouldn't be capable at all, the bid would not be winnable at all...

The casino hotel at BC Place is a step forward (and so is the refurbished BC Place itself), but the casino is absolutely puny in size...same goes for the plans for the new art gallery, which also seems to be heading towards the usual Vancouver route of mediocre. There's also a prevailing "no, it just won't work" attitude before even attempting to try it...a culture that inhibits us from thinking big, and unfortunately the only way of breaking this habit is to count on our leaders - it takes courage and vision from our leaders (Campbell, Watts) to be willing to wade through the political sh!storm to turn incredible and daring dreams into reality (e.g. how incredibly quick the clam-shaped glass roof over Robson Square was shot down). If Vancouver wants to be a big city, it needs to start acting like one.

We could also use another concert hall/performing arts centre, a sizeable venue is in high demand in the city...too bad the plans for such a civic venue have been shelved ever since the performing arts centre portion of the new convention centre was cut out. *fingers crossed for the Plaza of Nations site*

This is why the most obvious location for a truly grand, world-class casino/entertainment/hotel/theatre complex is the much larger, waterfront Plaza of Nations site. Sitting along side the glistening waters of False Creek, it provides a much more prestigious, spacious and scenic locale for international guests than that tiny site sandwiched next to the Cambie Street Bridge off-ramp. And being south of BC Place, it could be tall and dignified without casting shadows across the new retractable roof. It is a site worthy of a building of architectural significance and could rival or surpass the waterfront casino/entertainment complex (the name of which I have forgotten) in Sydney.
