Ha 905'ers, old people and small town Ontrian's trying to get their last fill of Tim Hortons before traveling across the globe in search of chain restaurants (somewhat kidding). I usually try to book my flights through Pearson during off peak hours.

That Toronto picture with the GO Train has IMO Toronto's new ugliest building downtown in it now that the Howard Johnson on Jarvis is gone.

Tim Hortons is the cheapest option for coffee/food at expensive airports.

Sure but I've found Starbucks to be priced about the same as the outside world.

The view from the middle of the river. I think this is the money shot.

I feel all wooty with the Pont Jacques Cartier banishing the idea of landlocked Montreal.

I found these two photos of Hamilton taken from the same angle, but two years apart. The city started switching the street lights to LEDs last summer and it's kind of cool to see how the skyline has a white glow at night in the 2016 photo, verse the orange glow in the 2014 photo...

Haha yeah. I always find it funny when the idea of Montreal being landlocked comes back on a thread... It's located on an archipelago made of 320 islands, in the middle of a wide navigable river that leads straight to the ocean without any canal I totally feel your woot!

I know its been said that LED lighting is supposed to reduce the amount of light reflecting back into the sky, but from what I've seen so far from them they actually make light pollution much worse. Halifax started switching several years back and the difference now is quite noticeable. As unfortunate as this is, I think the energy efficiency of them trumps this.

Here is an older picture of Halifax (about 7 years ago) from when there was a forest fire just outside of the city. I've always found this to be a pretty outstanding photograph:

It has more to do with the colour temperature of the light. High Pressure Sodium is between 1800-2200K, LED used for outdoor loghting is typically 4000K, sometimes 5000K. White light appears brighter to the human eye, so spillage may seem more aignificant even though it's either the same or less. LED fixtures used for roadway are directional, purely downlight, most HPS streetlights have at least 20% of the light going up.

A big problem with LED currently used outdoor is that it has a huge spike in the blue spectrum, which is what our bodies associate with daylight. This can cause major sleep disturbances. There is now a movement underway to persuade municipalities to use amber colour LEDs (ie. same as HPS) in order to prevent circadian rhythm disruption, however this hasn't really taken off in the market yet.

Major issue with amber LEDs is that it requires a thicker phosphor coating which decreases the efficiency by ~20% making for a slower ROI.

What bugs me about LED lighting is the directionality often means there's a small pocket of very bright light and then less diffusion into the surroundings. So unlike the old lights where it got gradually lighter and darker and your eyes could adjust you've now got super bright light that keeps ruining your dark vision and then much darker patches where you can't see well. It makes the streets feel less safe even if there's more total light.

The directionality is a strength of LEDs if used correctly, however a lot of planners don't completely understand lighting distributions, proper fixture spacings etc, so when used incorrectly it can cause a huge non-uniformity of light distribution. However if the LEDs are used correctly they're more uniform than any other light source. It's a light source that definitely requires more calculation, and when used correctly can provide a much more comfortable lighting atmosphere.
