After 70 years, the Halifax Harbour Bridges are now toll free. The Macdonald Bridge toll plaza was demolished last night. The Mackay Bridge toll Plaza will be removed next.

If true, this will be huge news for Moncton (especially the retail sector). Moncton is the closest mainland city to PEI (about 100 km).

Our Costco is already overrun with Islanders. Their presence in the store is about to take a big jump!!!

The rule for Costco is a minimum baseline population of 250,000.

There are 850,000 people in NB, hence three Costcos (Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton).

There are only 180,000 people in PEI.

They break this rule occasionally (new Costco in Rimouski), but, it seems to be a pretty hard and fast standard.

There are only two Costcos in NS for 1.1M people (both in HRM). They are seriously looking at a third store in HRM, but, no store in Cape Breton (similar population to PEI).

Prince George BC. The city itself has a population of 76,708; the metro census agglomeration has a population of 89,490. It has a Costco.
Grande Prairie was the seventh-largest city in Alberta in 2016, with a population of 63,166. It has a Costco.
Medicine Hat is about the same size as Grande Prairie and it also has a Costco.
Kingston (Ontario) has 170K in the very generously defined metro, and it has a Costco.

A lot of Costco's new stores have been in smaller markets. Brantford (~170k), Orillia (~50K), Collingwood / Wasaga Beach (~50k).

It depends a lot on demographics, local incomes, etc. Alberta supports a Costco in a lot of smaller communities as disposable incomes in Alberta are higher than anywhere else and lower sales taxes encourage higher consumer spending patterns.

PEI is not exactly high income though so I'm not sure if it would support one.. Similar to Alberta, Orillia and Wasaga Beach are fairly high-income areas due to it being cottage country so can support a costco in a smaller market.

I was in Kauai (pop 73K) a couple of years ago and their largest "city" (Lihue, pop <7K) has a Costco.

I think every island in Hawaii has a Costco. Obviously the week / two week long rental tourism fuel those stores.

Also, I was thinking.

What a waste of money that new Gordie Howe Bridge to the US is going to be if the US continues its hostilities.

I wish that money was used on improving east / west corridors instead.

It’s amazing how Trump will preside of its opening (and FIFA 2026) two major milestones for friendship at a time of animosity.

That is some tough geography to deal with. I used to drive over Patullo daily back in the early 90s, when I lived in Van and worked in Whalley. Later I moved to Richmond and took the Alex Fraser Bridge, but back then the latter's infrastructure was also deficient as it had a traffic light to get on/off the Richmond connector (Highway 91).

I was wondering about the GHB as well. I wouldn't put it past Trump to try to order the US Coast Guard to revoke the bridge's permit in a fit of pique.

Nah, he'll need the bridge for when he rolls his tanks across the border to begin his "final solution."

I've never hated anyone as much as I hate Donald Trump. His shit is smeared on everything, and it is inescapable. How did we end up here?

Gotta think of the long term. He won't be in power forever, despite any attempts otherwise. And while trade patterns may change for some economic sectors, there will be a need for a stable, government-run cross-border connection.

The Ambassador Bridge is not only ancient, but the fact it is in private hands was never a good thing (stupidity on government's part not to buy it when the opportunity was there)

He's also very old, out of shape, and losing his mind. But let's hope the American People can drag his orange ass out of the white house before the sweet release of death comes calling for him. And when they drag him out I hope they take out the entire WH team.

Love to see him forced to walk from the WH down the Mall to the Washington Monument in diapers behind Bernie Sanders ringing a bell and yelling out "Shame""Shame""Shame".

I fear for the American short-term future re: the replacements. E.g., Vance is far more worrisome.

But in the longer term, the new bridge still makes sense to me. Canada will not completely give up on trade relationships with U.S. companies, nor they with us. It may involve a re-balancing, but for Canada that's not a bad thing.

Just went to Lévis for the first time in a while, there's now a brand new horrible commie block that hides the classic view of the bridges as one approaches on the 20 eastbound. Yuck!!!
