Whatever, lets just progress this thread back to topic, which is Bicycles and Peds, not a Bicycle vs. Car War.

God no! When man went from the ox & cart to the modern car, from the rickshaw to the airplane, he clearly took a step backward.

This is interesting... cause if a Vancouver Bixi-type system is coming then these corrals are likely just placeholders for more significant Bixi stations and will in turn NOT allow for more storage of those crazy folks that own and ride their own bikes.

Seems like the Quebec connector is off again which is a shame as it could've normalized the northern end of Main St.

Quote:
With regard to transportation, a strategy has been developed with an emphasis on sustainable modes. The issue of the Kingsway-Quebec connector has also been resolved -- rather than using a direct, diagonal link, traffic between Quebec Street and Main Street or Kingsway will continue to rely
on all the Avenues from 1st to Broadway. The Plan also proposes to construct a cyclist permeable median on E. 2nd Avenue at Ontario (in complement with left turn lanes onQuebec at 2nd) in order to restrict lefts to and from Ontario Street.

Vancouver selected for major international cycling conference
http://vancouver.ca/mediaroom/news/d...ate=2010-10-19

Quote:
October 19, 2010 - Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson today thanked European Cycling Federation President Manfred Neun for selecting Vancouver as the host of the prestigious Velo-city Global 2012 conference, the first time the event has been held outside of Europe since 1996.

“Velo-city will bring together hundreds of planners, transportation experts and cycling specialists from around the world to discuss the fast-growing role of cycling in urban transportation,” said Mayor Robertson. “We are very excited that the European Cycling Federation has selected Vancouver for its global conference in 2012.

“Hosting a major international conference like Velo-city is a good boost for our local economy, and it’s a great opportunity to showcase Vancouver’s bike infrastructure to the world's leading transportation experts.”

An estimated 1,000 conference delegates and their guests will attend the conference, which will be held in June 2012 at a Vancouver location yet to be selected.

The Vancouver bid for the conference was prepared by the City of Vancouver, Tourism Vancouver, TransLink and the VeloWorks Cycling Society.

“Cycling is already an important travel mode in Metro Vancouver, and TransLink has partnered with the City, the province and the federal government in major infrastructure upgrades to make it an even better option for more people,” said TransLink’s vice president of Customer and Public Engagement, Bob Paddon. “TransLink is pleased to support the 2012 Velo-city conference.’

“Bravo to the City of Vancouver, Translink and VeloWorks for their efforts in bringing the 2010 Velo-City conference to Vancouver,” said Rick Antonson, president and CEO of Tourism Vancouver. “Not only will Velo-City generate business for the local tourism industry, it reinforces Vancouver’s reputation as a clean and green travel destination with exceptional offerings for cyclists.”

Don't be such a troll. It is a planning conference, for f-sake. If you don't like cycling, how about sticking to the other forums and leaving us alone.

This will be an excellent opportunity for all of the local engineering departments to attend from all of the municipalities who do not have the budget for an overseas or out of town trip.

Yeah, if anything, cycling will be more orderly during the conference to put the City's best foot forward.

I had to renew my auto insurance today and so while I was there I decided to ask about insurance for cyclists. What I learned was interesting.

There is no such thing as "bicycle insurance"

You cannot buy it from ICBC. If you're riding your bicycle and you cause property damage or injure someone, the normal means of liability coverage is through your homeowner's or renter's insurance. So I checked my homeowner's policy and sure enough it covers up to 2,000,000 in liability for any accidents I cause, whether they be due to riding a bike, causing an accident because I'm jaywalking, or whatever.

What you can buy from ICBC is under insured motorist protection. So if you're struck by a motorist who doesn't have enough insurance to pay for the effects of the injuries you've suffered (you require lifelong nursing care, for example) then this insurance will cover the difference. It costs $25/year for $2,000,000 in coverage and it applies you whether you're cycling, walking, or riding as a passenger in a car.

So the next time you hear someone complaining that "cyclists should be insured just like motorists", you can set them straight.

You'd be surprised about how many people don't have homeowner's insurance.
(i.e. seems like everyone whose house burns down failed to buy insurance and makes a plea to the public for help)

Not having home insurance has got to be the stupidest thing that anyone can do.

These people may not realize it but the stereo in their car isn't covered by car insurance but by their house insurance.

Apparently Toronto's Rob Ford (Toronto councilor now Mayor Elect) doesn't like bike lanes:

are they removing all the parking on both sides of Hornby? It looks like it's barely two lanes wide and definitely only one lane wide in some spots.

And where did the separated bike lane at the south end of Burrard come from? I assume that the bus just stops in the middle of traffic and the bus passengers cross the bike lane to get to the bus? just waiting for someone to get smoked....
