Every month Gr333n turns out a little nicer. Hopefully the next few office towers in the West Loop reflect the willingness to not VE too much

I saw Gr333ns kinetic wall and I have to say, without any wind it looks pretty boring and monotonous. They should of went with the design that has the pivots running vertically instead of horizontally. That way even without any wind or movement they could be at rest in an interesting pattern.

Moody Bible Institute Land Sale

This is a big deal. First Holy Name Cathedral and now Moody Bible Institute . Who would have thought so much development could be spurred by two religious entities cashing in their stash.

Combined with a zoning change from the city, the 10-acre site could support up to 5.3 million square feet of development

^ Gotta imagine they saw Holy Name sell one block for $100 million and that got the wheels turning...

^^^ I would expect more development from Loyola soon. They have been surprisingly quiet since the business school finaihed.

Didn't Moody just finish a new building? (I recall the construction shutting down my bike line on Wells for a long time)

Are they just looking to see one of those empty lots or an other building's lot?

I wonder though whether the result would be better if it were sold in pieces over time. Would that create more scarcity and therefore pressure to maximise density?

I could also see a planned development covering the whole area being a positive, if it was well executed.

What we don’t want is more of the towers-in-a-park crap that’s nearby, or the bland mixed-income development that lines Division west of Seward Park.

Linking Locust St up to Delaware would be positive.

Finally! Moody has been awful for the development of that area. Their buildings are actively spurning the street and they have so much land in prime development space. I didn't realize they also had the playing fields next to Walter Payton Prep. This could further develop the Wells Street Corridor all the way up to Old Town. And even if it is sold to one developer, 10 acres isn't so much space that it couldn't be done both densely and in a pro-urban fashion. I kind of hope that a group like Onni gets involved as they have done a pretty good job at Old Town Park.

It's worth remembering that when Cabrini-Green was Cabrini-Green, the Moody campus functioned as a wall between it and the neighborhoods to the east. I agree that times have changed and am excited for the potential development here. But let's not blame Moody for decisions that were made when the surrounding environment was very different.

I dunno if the people on Delaware would appreciate that. More realistic is linking Walton through to LaSalle... the building in the way (Dryer Hall) has already been shuttered by Moody and no doubt it will be torn down by whoever buys the land.

Ah yes, let us not blame the religious organization for turning its back on the most in need. Good call. Even if that was a good position in the 1980's, they have continued to shun their neighbors for the last 20 years after Cabrini Green was torn down and its residents dispersed. Instead of renovating their facilities or opening their doors to their neighbors with their more recent buildings, they have remained insular, isolating themselves behind thick brick walls and parking garages like they were some commuter campus for people living far away. But I am not a Christian, so what do I know?

Burnett likely to approve LG's west loop proposals:

Quote:
Despite pushback from neighbors, a West Loop alderman said he is likely to sign off on a trio of new buildings that would bring nearly 500 new apartments and offices to booming Fulton Market.

Chicago-based LG Development plan to build two apartment towers — scaling 20 and 22 stories tall — at 168 N. May St. and 171 N. Racine St. and an 11-story office building at 1150 W. Lake St. The trio of buildings will be called the Amylu Collection — a nod to Amylu Kurzawski, the third-generation owner of sausage maker ATK Foods that currently occupies part of the site.

Ald. Walter Burnett Jr. (27th), who fielded complaints from neighbors who think the buildings are too tall for the area, said he was “95 percent in support” of the project.

“I still have to hear what [the Department of] Planning says and what the neighborhood groups say but I like it,” Burnett said after a community meeting Tuesday night at Revel Fulton Market, 1215 W. Fulton Market.

Burnett especially liked the nearly 100 affordable housing units that will be built on site as part of the developer’s plan.

“To me having affordable units on-site is giving back to the community,” Burnett said.

Another hurrah for the shape of the 27th ward lol.

There are a lot of things wrong with urban renewal, but calling it unchristian seems a bit zealous..

Besides, that sort of urban renewal runs all down lasalle, and most of it isn't thanks to Moody's.

Building a wall to keep the scary black people out is not "urban renewal" and is absolutely unchristian.

That said most urban renewal projects were soaked in racism and other archaic ideas.
