I feel better about apartment builds too, although other cities like Denver are still building office space, so there must be a demand still. Maybe not tech but other industries that need office space.

Check out this office building going up in Denver. Wouldn’t mind a building like this in SLC. People will either love or hate the design

I think the Sundial will be fine because of its location. Its so close to all of the Law offices that it would be great for government related businesses. The one industry that always has demand, even in these times is government

Im more worried about the Main Street Tower… would be a shame if they demolished the theater just to not build the tower.

Photo Bump - Thanks Rockies for capturing these two projects. I noticed there's a cool tree sculpture on the corner of the 951 lofts project. If anyone is in the neighborhood of 9th and 9th and could capture that it would be appreciated. Looks like a noteworthy piece.

Rehab/Reuse - Historic Telephone Building: Soon to be Condos - Ninth and Ninth District
The business quarter of the emerging very hip 9th and 9th District

The project - The 3-story, 58-ft Telegraph Exchange building at 847 S. 800 E. dates from 1911, when it served as the nerve center for local operations of the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company. In the twenty years before Clearwater bought it in 2011, it was owned by the LDS Church and used as a warehouse.

Located at 847 S. 800 East, this three-story building was built in record-time between 1911-1912 by the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co. and was known as the Hyland Exchange Building. When built, it was located at the southern edge of Salt Lake City in the largely undeveloped Big Field farm plat located two miles from the city center. It was not until the 1930s that the 9th and 9th neighborhood was built up around the Hyland Exchange building and became the subdivision that now occupies the area.

By the 1910s, telephone service in Salt Lake had been steadily deteriorating to a point where phones had become more of a nuisance than a necessity. In response, the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph T&T) expanded and upgraded its infrastructure to give Salt Lake “a system second to none in the country.” It included many “invisible” improvements such as underground telephone lines that replaced poles as well as the “new, modern, fireproof” Hyland Exchange building.

The Hyland Exchange building debuted in 1912 as a two-and-a-half story building with the half-story a rooftop garden for use by the operators when they were off duty. Later, in 1916 this rooftop garden was enclosed and made into rest quarters for the operators. In 1926, a large rear addition was added to the Hyland Exchange...

...Recently, within the past couple of years, the building has been purchased by ClearWater Homes who plans to remodel the building into loft-style condominiums. The project, known as Telegraph Exchange Lofts will feature 17 large urban lofts featuring a “compelling architectural approach that blends historical reverence with the modern elements such as exposed steel, glass, and architectural metals.” Loft units will range in size from 1,200 sq. ft. to 2,700 sq. ft. and feature a rooftop deck that affords unparalleled panoramic views of the Wasatch front.

Planning commission approves upzone and master plan change at 9th & 9th to save old Telegraph Exchange building

Update, The Treehouse On 9th, (Working Title: 951 Lofts) Nearing Completion - Ninth and Ninth District

The Treehouse on 9th is a newly constructed mixed-use property consisting of four ground-floor micro-retail units and three high-end residential condos on the second floor. One lease has been signed so far with Protein Foundry for a space in the main-level retail, and other letters of intent are in progress for the remaining retail spaces. The upper level consists of three luxury multifamily condos totaling 3281 square feet. Each space has its own dramatic staircase that leads up to a private roof-top living space with views of Salt Lake City's skyline and the Wasatch Mountain range. 9th and 9th is Salt Lake City's most "hip" neighborhoods

Note: A very striking intricate bronze sculpture of a tree from the building's base to the roofline has been placed at the blank corner wall.
We don't have a clear photo of it at this time, but it's worth noting as a go-see if you're in the area. Last Photo gives us an outline of the 'Tree Artwork' and its placement.

There needs to be massive fines in place for developers thay demolish buildings only to not develop. I was ok with losing the theatre for a tower but if it's not built I will be infuriated, and I reckon I'm not alone in that sentiment.

As much as I believe that the theater was past saving, and my excitement surrounding a new tower, it does really seem that they rushed demolition in bad faith to shut Valentine up.

It was totally in bad faith. Just look at the demolition pattern; they made a bee-line through the parking garage, straight for the jugular.

Various U projects seeking legislative approval.

I haven't seen these here yet, though it's possible I missed them.

West Village Family and Graduate Housing Phase 2.

New Student Housing. This has been posted here but here is some info about the 2000 initial units they are seeking bonding for right now.

Astra 2/13/2023 AM

In preparation for the crane extension Schmoe had mentioned earlier, here are a couple of shots of Astra today, at varying zoom levels.

There is some chance Stockholm will throw itself into the ring but that is unsure right now. We are only 7 years out now so hopefully the IOC doesn't keep dragging its feet. LA 2028 and domestic sponsorships remains the biggest hurdle and the reason we haven't already been awarded the games. It's seems the IOC wants us to host 34 but may have no choice but to give us 30.
The other thing now holding it up is the IOC is taking a longer look at climate change projections, and what the potential conditions will look like in 2030 and beyond for these potential sites.

According to USA Today article back in December:
"Concern over warmer temperatures and vanishing snow in some of the world’s winter playgrounds has put the selection of a host city for the 2030 Winter Olympics on hold.

The International Olympic Committee said this week it no longer plans to target host selection during its 2023 meeting. Instead the committee will give its Future Host Commission for the Olympic Winter Games more time to address its challenges.

One proposal floated would require future Winter Olympic hosts to prove their average minimum temperatures in February over 10 years were below freezing at potential snow competition venues.

Without dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the group concluded, only one of the 21 previous locations — Sapporo — would be able to provide reliably fair and safe conditions for snow sports by the end of the century."

Ironically, Sapporo is the one bid in turmoil and where the people don't want it to come back.

I think they are stalling until a willing party steps up. SLC has said they want 2034 and IOC agrees. They will wait until another willing party enters a bid then award 2030 to them and 2034 to SLC at the same time.

This is from the sugarhouse sports clips instagram page (@scsugarhouse) and they suggest the building will use the same concrete podium and start to rebuild in June.

Astra stream will go down at ~11:45 for KUTV 2 News at Noon. I'll bring it back with a new URL at about 1:00pm.

My guess is they still intend to build the tower, but they wanted the demo completed as fast as possible just to end the constant attacks and controversy.
