Just before Christmas Toronto got its newest BRT segment with some beautiful stations, we went to check it out and report on what will be the best used section of VIVAs "rapidway"!

As others have said, rather than build a line that will take decades to fill up - cover more people today and build a relief line later, if each line is lighter the line by line costs should also be lower.

Like the roads, things are bound to get congested during rush hour, the issue is not only capacity . . . its also circulation.

Surprised nobody mentioned this, but LRV's are also more expensive to maintain because they are much more mechanically complex than traditional frame on bogie railcars.

Nope, you could automate and you could go to 2 cab trains as well, though currently the solution for that would be what Eglinton is doing in Toronto - putting seats where a cab would be and have two single units connected back to back.

The current system could have automation, door spacing is a non issue, run trains back to back and they become symmetrical though that doesn't matter either the trains always have the same door spacing when running in each direction (or they could) so you could install psds based on that.

Got to interview a wayfinding advisor at Metrolinx on all the cool and interesting stuff going on with GO Station names, the T icon and Eglinton Crosstown!

My gripe with the T has always been how banal it is. Hearing that Metrolinx had a unique symbol and after focus groups ended up with the T is a bit tragic, like the loss of the Edmonton LRT icon.

I can't imagine any of the non-Metrolinx controlled systems ever taking them u; on using it at bus stops, etc. It just doesn't have the design merit to be taken up by the YRT's of the area. I'd love to be wrong on that, but certainly it won't happen until they sort fare integration!

Today we look at another station getting major upgrades and a grade separation in Toronto in order to enable frequent two way service, a model for North American regional rail:

It's part of downtown Calgary... and has been mentioned countless times throughout this forum through the decades. Not sure how it's news.

Hence "Stampede Station"... it's one of the two (soon to be three) stations at Stampede Park.

Interestingly, no Victoria Park in Ottawa! Unless you count the one in Metcalfe, a village 34 kilometers from downtown, but within the city limits.

We have a minor residential Victoria Street 2 kilometers from downtown and Victoria Island which is downtown.

Quite an improvement over the current station, particularly on the accessibility front.
