We're in for... could be nothing, could be 50cm of snow... this weekend. There's a cut off low that will form near the island early this weekend, and we can't predict its exact location closely enough to know what's going to happen this far out. Likeliest situation right now is the heaviest snow will be west of Avalon, and the Avalon will get a lot of snow and rain. The storm will begin in the middle of the weekend and extend into Tuesday/Wednesday of next week.

Sounds ominous.

What started out as a chance of flurries earlier in the week for Thurs/Fri has now changed to 5 - 10 cm...

With this week's snow, Halifax no longer has any bare ground, except for paved areas that have been cleared. And it looks like it's going to stay that way for a while.

Currently -1C and partly cloudy in Moncton at 11AM.

There is an Alberta Clipper moving through this evening. Most of the snow will be in northern NB, but, Moncton could pick up 2-4 cm of the white stuff.

More snow tomorrow night, but, again Moncton is not in the crosshairs. This one is a coastal low and may bring 10 cm to Halifax. Again, Moncton should be les than 5 cm.

Still no blizzards in our forecast.

The next 10 days on forecast says highs from 1-7 and all sunny. I’d be happy if half those days end up being sunny. In reality, we’ll be lucky if we get three.

Yeah, I've found the forecast (both EC & TWN) have had trouble accurately predicting sunshine. It's also quite location dependent; not uncommon for it to be sunny on one side of the GTA and overcast on the other.

In any case, it will feel a lot more like March than February for the first few weeks of the month. I read an article saying the polar vortex will be back at the end of the month, and apparently stronger than the arctic blast we got in January.

Currently sunny and -2 at 12:30pm. Nice day out there, light winds. Something ominous is brewing for late weekend into early next week though. A rain situation for St. John's would be ideal, it's been so cold so far this winter that we've basically had no thaw/melts, so the snow that's fallen since early January has stuck around.

I hope it's stronger. I like cold weather, but I also don't enjoy the idea of warm winters like this being more of a normality in the coming years as climate change continues.
It's supposed to be 5C today....usually its about 3 to 10 degrees below that from my memory.

For about 85 of the last 90 days, it's been grey and cloudy in Toronto blah. Muddy, grim and about 40F in High Park this afternoon
https://imgur.com/a/SI0w2Hw
I've noticed since they closed most of the park to traffic in August, it's very quiet and mostly locals. It's almost like the rich locals want to keep the 905 new Canadians out of the area.

Today was 4C, and overcast. We had a wee bit of fog, which dissipated fairly quickly. It was a nice day for a walk, after being downtown for longer than I wished to be.

I regretted taking this route due to the mud, but otherwise it was good to see the creek here.

I like the evergreens here, this is my lame attempt at continuing to take overly monochrome images

A couple of weeks ago HRM announced that they would no longer be checking city lakes for ice thickness (for safe ice skating).

Quote:

Last Updated Jan 17, 2024 11:42:30 AM.

Halifax Regional Municipality employees will no longer test ice on lakes and ponds amid warming winters.

The municipality announced on Wednesday that it is ending its ice thickness testing program. Under that program, workers with the parks and recreation department would check how thick ice was on bodies of water across HRM, and post to the city’s website where it was safe to skate and take part in other activities.

“Due to warmer winters, there is a smaller period of time where testing ice thickness is even possible,” the city said in a statement. “For example, there was only two to three weeks this past winter where testing could take place. This resulted in one day of approved skating each year over the past few years.”

The statement said the program required significant resources from the parks and rec department.

HRM is advising residents to follow the Canadian Red Cross guidelines for ice thickness – at least 15cm for individual skating and 20cm for a group of skaters. In particular, it said people should be careful where streams flow into and out of lakes.
https://halifax.citynews.ca/2024/01/...sting-program/

If anything, this is a clear sign of global warming/climate change. A few decades ago, skating on city lakes was a staple every winter. I recall playing endless hockey games on various lakes in Dartmouth... it was a given. They even used to hold motorcycle ice racing and I recall even some car racing on the lakes. Now even ice skating is sketchy.

Cloudy and -2 at 10am. Should remain like this for most of the day.

It's starting to become more clear that a major, long-duration snow event will occur in NL and NS between this weekend and mid next week. Probably still too early to talk about amounts, but some models are throwing out over 80cm for parts of Central NL and Eastern NS.

-1C and light snow in Moncton at 9 AM.

It snowed all night, but, with no more than 2 cm of accumulation. This is the Alberta Clipper I was referencing yesterday. Northern NB got a lot more snow than us.

As for the long duration coastal storm for this weekend and early next week, Moncton will again be on the fringe of the disturbance and probably will receive no more than 10 cm tops, spread over 3-4 days.

I think Halifax has been snowier this winter than Moncton.
