MTO is planning 10 lanes along the QEW from Hamilton to St Catharines. Even "stacked highways". More info in Feb 2013. All this to avoid another highway above the Niagara Escarpment.

Basically from where the photo was taken towards Montreal, the boulevard act as a divider: Saint-Hubert is on the left and Longueuil on the right.

If anything should be stacked, it's the DVP; although, this would require digging down as well because of the bridges.

BC had this same system too briefly in the 1960s/70s. The Trans-Canada Hwy 1 was originally the "401" to signify 4 lanes, and Hwy 99 in BC from Vancouver to the border was "499". Somewhere in the late 70s I think the 4 was dropped and highways changed to their current 1 and 99.

Blair Road is Ottawa Road 29.

Eagleson Road is Ottawa Road 49.

Montreal Road is Ottawa Road 34.

Walkley Road is Ottawa Road 74.

Hunt Club is Ottawa Road 32.

And of course the Queensway from the split to Orleans and Cumberland is Ottawa Road 174. This last one is the only one that is used in everyday speech.

Likewise in Kingston, there are some municipal road numbers, derived either from former Ontario King's Highways or former Frontenac County Road numbers:

Kingston Road 2 - former Highway 2 routing, usually called "Highway 2" east of the downtown and "Princess Street" west of the downtown

Kingston Road 9 - usually called Sydenham Road

Kingston Road 10 - Perth Road, sometimes called County Road 10

Kingston Road 11 - Battersea Road, sometimes called County Road 11

Kingston Road 15 - usually called "Highway 15", and it continues north of the 401 as King's Highway 15 anyways

Kingston Road 23 - known as Taylor-Kidd Blvd

Kingston Road 33 - former Highway 33 routing, often called Bath Road and sometimes Highway 33, especially as it continues west of the city as King's Highway 33

Kingston Road 38 - former Highway 38 routing, usually called Highway 38 or sometimes Gardiners Road south of the 401

Other former Frontenac County road numbers within Kingston city limits are no longer posted.

Sudbury has such a system as well, I'm not as familiar with it but I know the original Highway 17 is called Sudbury Road 55 or Municipal Road 55.

The province is leaning toward widening area roads rather than paving a controversial new 400-series highway through Flamborough, says Ontario’s transportation minister.

Bob Chiarelli outlines the latest long-term “preferred highway expansion options” for Hamilton and Halton in a letter to local politicians.

They include widening existing area highways, expanding the QEW to eight lanes between Hamilton and St. Catharines and creating a new multi-highway south of Welland between Highway 406 and Fort Erie.

As late as October, MTO staff said they were still evaluating a range of long-term highway options for the area, including three potential highway routes that would cut through Flamborough from Highway 403 near Jerseyville to various points along Highway 401. A fourth route would have linked Jerseyville to toll Highway 407 via north Burlington.

The preferred options in the transportation study will be explained in greater detail at a series of public open houses planned for February.

The letter doesn’t specify which highways in Hamilton should be widened, but an environment assessment map released in the fall shows a potential doubling of lanes along Highway 6 and two expansion options for Highway 403 through the city — widening to 10 lanes, or “stacking” traffic on a rare double-decker roadway.

Probably the best answer, since most of the traffic is focused on the QEW corridor and a new highway on the escarpment would be an environmental disaster. I prefer widening to 8 or 10 lanes (maybe with 2 HOV lanes) from the Red Hill to the 406. The QEW in St. Catharines cannot be widened though, so a new corridor (such as 406-420) would be necessary in that section.

^^^ Always liked the QEW-Gardiner-427 interchange. The 427 south - Gardiner east ramp is actually 4 levels high offering nice views of the city.

The 401-403-410 interchange is so large, that image only shows about half of it. I was going to take an imagine of it from goggle earth but I see you already did elsewhere, here's the rest;

My personal favorite though is the 401-Allen 'road'() interchange. A hybrid cloverstack/three-level turbine interchange with collector & express connectors;

There's also a subway running down the middle of it. Which added another 9 bridges with two subways stations on either end.
Don't think there's another quite like it in the world.
