Cold, blustery, snowy. Sorry no pics... so most probably won't even read this.

Enjoy your weather, wherever you are.

It's fine. We get enough snow this time of year that most people put snow tires on, plus there's a pretty efficient road-clearing system out here. The snow finished up late afternoon, and by now the roads are all cleared and salted, though I'm sure the winds are causing some snow to blow back over the roads tonight. Even my low-priority residential street has been cleared.

Just came in from shoveling and I use a larger scoop to push the snow around and a smaller shovel to clean up. Observations: (1) you have to be careful how you wedge the shovel you're not using such that it doesn't blow away (into the car or into the woods in my case), (2) -15°C wind chill is deceiving... i.e. I froze my b***s off out there!

The middle of my driveway was bare, and around the edges it was about 1.5 ft deep, thanks to the wind. The air was fresh anyhow!

I think they do, as I recall. No place is as bad as Vancouver, except south of the border. You actually can get by without dedicated snow tires here, as long as your routes are not too long or demanding with hills, and not going into the interior, Whistler, etc. Today it was about 13C, possibly 15C according to my thermometer, feeling more gentle instead of just cold and wet.

Good to know. One day, we'll figure it out over here.

It was a nice 26c on Xiaoliuqiu Island today. It's a small island around 45 minutes south of Kaohsiung. A nice little getaway from the city, and a fantastic spot of sea turtle sightings.

As a little bonus, I went into the water to see if I could find a turtle, and it barely took me more than thirty seconds before I found one.

I was watching some Seattle news during that last cold snap and they were reporting about the traffic in the mountain passes, talking about mandatory chains on tires. Does BC have a similar law?

We do. It's illegal to drive on any mountain highway after October 1st with summer tires. Chains on five axles, and winter tires on cars.

It felt like March Break in Christie Pits Park today: sunny, no snow, 40F

A great afternoon for a 12km walk to the Toronto Reference Library and back to High Park area

So sad to see none of the noisy kids reading any books. Just laptops, screens and iphones. They really need to learn to STFU and read books again.

-1C with a wind chill of -6 and cloudy. Temperature wise it is OK but would like some sun.

It was 0C (wind chill of -5) last night. So it was actually a bit chillier during the day.

The warmspot was Abbotsford, BC at 18.2C. Or should I say is... because that's the temperature right now. Needless to say it is the warmest temperature of 2024.

Warmest low was West Vancouver, BC at 11.4C.

Yesterday's low of 10.0C in White Rock, BC is confirmed... first double digits low of the year.

Full on spring in the West. Once again, it's yo-yo there with the thermometer while the Great Lakes are keeping temperatures relatively stable here.

I think it's really whatever is the norm for your area. If you only get one or two freeze-ups in the winter, then you will try to make it without snow tires. Likewise, the government will tend to not invest in a bunch of snow-clearing equipment and de-icing substances and deploying methods, and hope for the best.

I think the difference between the east and west coasts is that significant snowfall and icing is regular on the east coast and irregular on the west, thus, when it happens in Vancouver, people are less-prepared, but it's so infrequent that they are just willing to put up with the inconvenience that one or two storms per winter creates. In the east, it happens enough that it's not worth the risk.

Man, those photos are just the polar opposite of what I experienced tonight... thanks for posting them... it's a nice break from my reality.

I must add that I really appreciate the St. John's pics that you post regularly. It's been too long since I've been there (like over 10 years!), but it feels like I visit there every day when I see SHH's pics!! Thanks!

I know your feeling!

But it’s not just you.

I post stats and make graphs at the end of each month, which I originally thought would be centre pieces for conversation on a weather / climate thread, but even those often get no comments / interaction.

So don’t take it personally. It’s always interesting to read up on what’s happening across the country and beyond.

I always read your graphs. Lots of great stuff in there. And I always massively appreciate your Japan pictures in this thread.

I really should comment more in here rather than just share my posts, but I find that I'm usually thumbing through SSP on my phone while riding the bus or train, and tend to passively scroll through. I'm way more talkative in SSP when I'm on the computer, and it's easier to type.

Overcast, calm and mostly dry. I had my balcony door wide open for a couple of hours today. Very mild temps.

Monday's high at Vancouver Harbour was 13 C, the low was 10 C.

Got about 25 cm of snow between yesterday afternoon and early this morning. Unlike Halifax, our snow clearing is abysmally bad.

Pretty cool out there on the backside of the storm, -6 and cloudy.

overcast and 4 today. Sunny and 5 yesterday - crazy weather really for what is supposed to be the coldest day of the year.

As of today the average temperatures start to tick upwards - which is exciting in a way, I guess. A long way to go before winter is over, but at least the "worst" is in the rear view mirror now.

I was up in Haliburton on the weekend and it was a above freezing up there too - but there was at least a foot of snow on the ground. The lakes were frozen enough to walk on, but not by much.

Meanwhile at home I still have yet to shovel my driveway this year.

I always enjoy seeing your pictures too! I'm just as guilty as everyone else. Your pics, SHH, mcminsen, TownGuy, etc... are all a major reason why I come to this thread. I always want to say something, but get sidetracked with something else.

Also, just like you, I hate typing on my smartphone...

Also, that 18.2 high in Abbotsford last evening is insane. 18+ anywhere in Canada in January is quite noteworthy.

Ditto on that.

I always go through your climate data posts with interest. I am fascinated by the differences and similarities between east and west coasts, but am admittedly a little shy on posting about it sometimes as similar discussions in the past seemed to stir up an east/west coast rivalry with subsequent heated exchanges... I think I have a little PTSD related to that still...

Seriously, though, please keep it up and I will try to toss in some commentary when I'm not on my phone...
