Fundraising finally blooming for new Regina Floral Conservatory
After a three-year hiatus, the first dollars have been raised to relocate the Regina Floral Conservatory to Wascana Centre.
Both the city and the Provincial Capital Commission, the current steward of Wascana Centre, remain on board. But due to the three-year hiatus, some steps completed three years ago are being retraced, including re-evaluating the $29 million price tag attached to the project.

This is the one thing I want more than anything else proposed right now. I really hope they don't scale back their original proposal much.

Yeah. This project I connect with personally and would be perfect for the park. I also hope they get enough funding to do it justice.

For most people if you need self storage for any more than a few months you might as well just sell it. I wonder what percent of units people pay for a year or two, then stop paying and their stuff gets auctioned off by the operator.

People do use storage units for work storage rather than keeping at their own property.

Opinion: Regina density minimums should not be flexible
Instead, maybe at this juncture we can discuss whether raising the neighbourhood density minimums makes more sense, writes Vanessa Mathews

It is worth noting that in 2021, Regina recorded a -5.2 per cent rate of intensification to established areas (meaning that we literally demolished more units than we built). This positions Regina as holding the second worst core growth rate across cities in Canada according to Statistics Canada.

I am sure the prof that wrote this is a smart person, but why would she say that we demolished 5.2% more units than we built. That is clearly nonsensical. I do not know exactly where this intensification stat came from but I assume it is population density. The change is likely mostly caused by more vacant units and smaller household sizes. Where you have a house with a family of 5 replaced by a single person, for example. I also understand that a lot of foreign students and workers who tend to share accommodations did not arrive in 2021 due to the pandemic.

We demolished more infill units than we built in 2021.

Yeah, this city council is terrible and is actively making downtown worse.

Wow....good for Regina. In Saskatoon we have been trying to negotiate a rail move or compromise for our North Downtown area for years!!! Wanting to develop that area but the tracks cut right through it.

Maybe we can look to Regina as setting a precedent.

Moving the railyards would be a great opportunity to open a 20,000-car parking lot.

Probably wouldn't fly as there is no core neighborhood housing to demolish

I don't think the rail move is going to free up much in the way of usable land. Maybe a bit beside Winnipeg Street. The line through Eastview may need to stay to provide access to the petroleum facility off McDonald. There is also access to that line via CN's tracks. I don't know if it is CP/CN or both that service that. But at least the long potash trains will stop going through there to get to the CP main line.

Everything she's said is true.
We are seeing a decline in population and essentially no development in the established neighbourhoods.

Thank goodness and good riddance. As a logo it was awful, as was the City branding at the time. Don't get me wrong, it's a good effort to drive up hometown pride, and I even have a couple of T-shirts with the new I [heart] [R-swoosh] logo. But that particular location in front of City Hall and along Victoria Av deserves something a bit more monumental and timeless than a crappy '90s clip art mash up. Even a sign with big letters "REGINA" like other city halls do for tourist photos would be an improvement.

An iconic Regina sign that has stood in front of city hall since 2002 has been removed.

The "I Love Regina" sign was removed in May and is now "safely stored" elsewhere, city officials have confirmed. They did not answer questions about whether the sign, which has been replaced with a potted plant, is coming back and who directed it to be removed.

"I Love Regina has evolved since its inception in 2002, including updates to the logo," a statement from the city reads. "Longer term plans for that space continue to be discussed."

I have been wanting the large light-up REGINA letters somewhere downtown for a while. Pat Fiacco Plaza would be a good area.
