Talked to one of the Line 2 drivers today randomly. He said he doesn't know for sure but is pretty confident any delays on the extension right now are due to staffing issues. No point in testing if there are no drivers to run the line when it opens....

Yes, people directly involved in rail operations for Line 1 have told me this as well. A lack of trained operators is one of the main issues right now, similar to how it was for Trillium Line in 2024.

From what I've heard, Substantial Completion likely won't be achieved before September with launch in November looking most probable, provided there aren't further delays.

It's too bad automated trains didn't exist when we designed Line 1! Wait, what's that Vancouver? You opened your automated train in 1986?

New Trim LRT Station a hit with future Transpo riders
Several families were among the crowds out to take a look at shiny new LRT station.

Dozens of visitors, including many families checked out the almost ready-for-action Trim LRT station Saturday.

And by all appearances they liked what they saw.

“When (Trim) opens, it’s going to be a gamechanger,” said Kim LeBrun, 46, who described herself as one of OC Transpo’s “top fans.”

Trim is part of the Line 1 East Extension and is one of five stations being added after Blair Station, currently the last stop on the Confederation Line. It’s the final stop after a series of stations that also includes Montréal, Jeanne d’Arc, Convent Glen, and Place d’Orléans.

The extension will add more than 12.5 kilometres of train tracks to connect to communities including Orléans, Blackburn Hamlet and Beacon Hill.

The neighbourhood around Trim is relatively new development with not much happening around it. It has a covered pedestrian bridge connecting riders to the trains above Highway 174.

To get to Trim Station, there are over 1,000 Park and Ride spaces, two bus routes and several bike racks and pathways.

While specific dates have not been determined, the new East extension is anticipated to be open in late 2025.

LeBrun, who has been a transit rider for nearly 32 years, said she had been waiting a while for the station to open to make her commute even faster.

“I am going to enjoy it when it opens up,” she said.

Looks fantastic. Seems they learned some lessons after Stage 1 and made some design changes for easier and cheaper maintenance while providing a cleaner look. Much prefer the concrete looking panels, the ceiling that looks like metal instead of the wood slats that fade, chip and attract spider webs in between, and the metal railings, eliminating the glass that was often vandalized and trapped garbage in between the railing and walls.

The retail and washrooms are also in more logical, less awkward locations.

Unfortunately I didn't go in person. I mistakenly thought it would be open on Sunday as well. I guess I'll have to wait for the opening.

@2:55 The paint is flaking off the railings? It's even more obvious @5:15

That was quick.

Aside from that it looks pretty sharp. Agreed the ceiling treatment is much improved.

Wonder if they did something about heated platforms this time.

The platforms and stairs will undoubtedly have functioning snowmelt on day 1, as contractually required. The question is, how long will those systems hold up? If heat trace cables start to malfunction from burnout or damage, you can bet RTM won't be ripping up the concrete slab to fix them.

Superstructures not galvanized in first phase, extensive corrosion at the base of all the structures. Going to be a massive bill for the City at the end of the term. ALL EXPOSED METALS ***MUST*** be either stainless or galvanized in these systems at all stations. Saving a buck is a very, very stupid reason for having all these exposed surfaces that will require regular maintenance, or worse still, significant structural repair when RTG slaps paint over rust for 30 years (or does nothing at all) and holes are eaten through the structure.

Rant done, for now.

Transit Committee heard that final construction activities and train testing on the O-Train East Extension are well underway and nearing completion. Station occupancy for the east stations is nearly complete with occupancy permits expected later this year. Trial running is anticipated to begin in the fall and the system is projected to open to the public in Q4 2025.

Some more testing on Sunday, with shots of the train over the 174.
