Merivale Mall adds Marshalls outlet in $10-million renovation (via Ottawa Citizen)

That's unbelievable...Kind of like the renovation of Hazeldean Mall a few years ago. A few of these old small malls have managed to extend their lifespans beyond all odds, unlike Heron Gate and Pinecrest. I don't suspect Beacon Hill will ever be revamped.

I mean, it is barely a mall. When I was in high school at Colonel By, I had literally no reason to go there. That would be the first grop they would need to look at targeting if they wanted some renewal.

Having a Marshall's a mere 500m from Winners is interesting. Maybe they're counting on customers not knowing that they are essentially the same store (like Future Shop and Best Buy right across the street).

Haha..Shoppers Drug Mart has always been the one and only reason to visit the Beacon Hill Mall. BTW this mall has been revamped several times since it opened in the early 70s. It had some decent stores and services back in the day.
Too bad it's been taken over by government offices and the Sally Ann. Looks like they're in there to stay!

Nice to see Merivale Mall stay viable, its a decent community mall. Glad its not being turned into another big box dump. More comfortable indoors when its 30 below outside.

Yes, in some ways but Marshalls usually carries higher end brands than Winners (e.g. Gucci bags or shoes). They are owned by the same company TJX and in the US, Winners is the equivalent of TJ Maxx.

I too went to ColBy - 1978-80.

The mall at the time had a Radio Shack (where I worked part-time), a fine hobby shop, Joe Feller (it was a men's shop in the E.R. Fisher mold) A&P, Zeller's (before the HBC years), a sit-down restaurant, a post office, a magazine and book store, Scotiabank, Fine's Florist, Direct Film (photographic and photo finishing store), a St. Clair paint store, another store I can't remember, plus probably a ladies clothing store, hairdresser and barbershop.

There was also a basement that had community meeting space. I remember attending a presentation by the Progressive Conservative candidate for the 1979 or 1980 federal election. I think the local Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) women's group also met there.

Had to walk down Sparks Street this morning and noticed that the Green Dragon Gift Shop was closed and empty.

I was last in there in July or August last year. It was really a collection of things begging for a flea market near you. I had no idea how it survived fire code inspection. But it was a truly unique experience stepping back in time like something out of a 1960s James Bond movie.

I remember a Dairy Queen in the mall at one point too.

It also had a video game arcade that was really hopping in the early days of the phenom.

the only times I was in there was to buy fireworks... they had (from what I could tell) the best selection in the city... strange place for a fireworks store
