Really? I have hopes for the airport, but the traffic along Upper James will never be near what the 1 route is.

A little update on Air Canada and Newleaf, Starting Oct 30 the morning flight to Montreal will go from a 8:10 departure to a 9:10 departure. On November 5 they will be adding a Saturday morning flight. That will make it 2 flights a day, 7 days a week. Recently they have been over selling the morning flight to Montreal and the evening flight from Montreal. They most likely have to go to a bigger plane.
It looks like Newleaf will be adding 2 destinations to Florida starting sometime in December.

I'm sure they'd put one on the route if they had it. Their E175s, CRAs and Q400s are stretched thin. They're about to get 5 more E175s and 5 more CRAs though, so that should help.

Looking into it, they're also getting 5 more Q400s (aside from those being transferred from Sky Regional to Jazz). Maybe they could put one on some of the flights?

Right now it looks like Newleaf will be doing Orlando and St. Pete's. Won't know for sure until they announce it officially.

It looks like Hamilton (YHM) may get 2 new airlines by next summer. They are planning to make YHM their eastern hub.

On November 3rd 2016, Transport Minister Marc Garneau approved the request by Canada Jetlines and Enerjet for exemption from current foreign ownership rules, which allowed the airline to access necessary capital in order to begin operations.

From Canada Jetlines web site:

Quote:
Canada Jetlines, planning to launch operations in summer 2017, will build strong primary and secondary routes by operating scheduled point-to-point jet air service with primary bases at the Vancouver International Airport (“YVR”) and in Southern Ontario. Jetlines plans to operate flights throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean, starting with six Boeing 737 aircraft in the first year of operation and expanding to 40 aircraft over the first eight years of operations.
Quotes from an article out of Winnipeg this morning about Jetlines:

Quote:
Canada Jetlines Ltd., based in Richmond, B.C., hopes to establish itself as an ultra-low-cost carrier in Canada, flying up to 64 domestic and international routes within eight years.
“You start with two aircrafts because it’s basically a government regulation, but we are up to six aircraft in the first year and then we add five aircraft a year. Our business model goes out for eight years.”
Jetlines said "it has an investor lined up that would allow it to hit that target and get planes in the sky within six month".

Canada Jetlines anticipated route network based on 16 aircraft. They plan to have up to 40 aircraft in 8 years and according to another document published by them, they plan to base 19 planes out of YHM.

Another start up airline is FlyToo owned by Calgary based Enerjet. Enerjet also show Hamilton as their eastern hub. From an article in the Financial Post:

Quote:
Indigo co-founder and managing partner Bill Franke told the Financial Post in July that he would be “actively interested” in Canada, but only if the foreign ownership rules changed.
Indigo Partners has backed some of the world’s most successful ULCCs, including Florida-based Spirit Airlines Inc., which introduced the model to the United States under Indigo’s guidance a decade ago.
Although Enerjet and Indigo still need to reach a definitive agreement on what exactly the investment will look like, having such a prominent investor lined up will significantly cut down on the airline’s launch time, said Darcy Morgan, Enerjet’s chief commercial officer.
Enerjet already has an operating certificate for its charter service, which will save it “at least a year,” and Indigo’s support will also take “months out of the cycle,” Morgan said.
“I’d like to think we’re probably 18 months ahead of anyone who would be starting from scratch.”

From my 10 years working for the airport, one thing that I learned was to take every announcement with a grain of salt. Don't believe it until you can take a picture of it.

We heard you Hamilton

CALGARY, Nov. 7, 2016 /CNW/ - WestJet announced today the airline will again connect John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport with Vancouver International Airport in 2017. Service commences April 30, 2017 with four-time weekly service, moving to a daily flight, June 28 to September 7, and returning to four-time weekly flights until October 27.

"The people of the greater Hamilton area adore WestJet's low fare, high care service as evidenced by the high demand we saw on the route this past summer," said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Commercial. "We heard the citizens of Hamilton and we want to thank them for their loyalty by bringing back even more non-stop service; giving them access to Vancouver's 27 non-stop routes on approximately 63 daily departures. We look forward to offering our guests in Hamilton and Vancouver additional access to WestJet's growing national and international network, low fares and award-winning guest experience."

"Hamilton to Vancouver is one of the most requested services we receive from passengers in Hamilton and surrounding region, both for business and leisure," said Vijay Bathija, John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, President & CEO. "We are thrilled with today's announcement and thank our long-standing partner, WestJet, for recognizing this need. We look forward to welcoming WestJet service to Vancouver in April 2017."

"We are very pleased that WestJet is bringing back their service between YVR and Hamilton. Even better, they will increase frequency to daily during the busy 2017 summer season," said Craig Richmond, President and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. "WestJet is a valued partner and every new flight brings new jobs and new opportunities for British Columbians. We look forward to the service returning."

In addition to the Vancouver route, WestJet operates daily service to Calgary from Hamilton and seasonal service to Orlando, Florida and Cancun, Mexico.

Hamilton/Vancouver flights will be operated on WestJet's Boeing 737NG aircraft featuring Plus, Canada's only system-wide, premium economy seating, and WestJet Connect, WestJet's inflight entertainment system connected directly to smartphone, tablet or computer. Almost 70 per cent of WestJet's Boeing fleet is now equipped with WestJet Connect.

Here's hoping the airport keeps up this renaissance. Needs to advertise to London, Kitchener, Niagara, etc. to get more users.

Apparently on Monday WestJet is announcing resuming of some services to Hamilton (YHM) and returning of an old route. This will start around the middle of January. They will be bringing back Halifax and it is a possibility it maybe daily service. They are bringing back Edmonton that they keep on trying to get rid of but Newleaf keeps showing full flights on. WestJet is also going to do Winnipeg, a route that they have not flown in over 3 years. Again Newleaf has full flights on Winnipeg.

Edmonton and Winnipeg will be flown on alternating days.

Also over Christmas and New Year’s WestJet will be adding four extra flights to Calgary on December 23, 24, 31 and January 7. They will be afternoon flights around 4 or 5 pm.

This is sort of good, but I wonder if the rational thing is for people to fly New Leaf rather than WestJet, since if New Leaf dies, WestJet will promptly drop these new flights.
