Speaking of the new bridge, I just got an IM from a contact stating that there is now water flowing underneath the new bridge! The river channel has been officially restored!!!

That was fast FROM April 5, when the causeway shut down. I wonder if the channel will widen at a faster pace as a result?

Removing those gates is going to be a big part of this job. It would be great if they had a webcam set up so we could see the work being done.

Here's documentary evidence of the river flowing freely underneath the new span. The river channel should widen naturally with time.

This has always been the plan. The channel they dug under the bridge is quite narrow. Now, Mother Nature shall finish the widening job.

I’ve heard a couple of times now that the gates will not be removed. Buried.

Well, it would certainly be quicker just to bury them (unless there is an engineering reason for removal).

It would make sense to just remove the upper steel section and leave the concrete supports in the water.

The concrete supports are not going to be underwater. They’re going to be underground.

Council approved a motion to explore the idea of acquiring additional land around Mill Creek that is privately owned in order to enable the Town of Riverview to continue investing in and expanding Mill Creek Nature Park.

If successful, this could more than double the current area.

I have no issue with burying the gates but it certainly seems odd that the province spent millions trying for several years to remove the old bridge abutments that were under the old Gunningsville Bridge, and will now simply bury the gates. Maybe that's BECAUSE it took millions, and years, to remove the old abutments under now-removed bridge.

Since they are filling in the area where the gates are and re-directing the flow to the north, I can see why it wouldn't make sense to waste time and money removing the abutments. They will be buried anyway. But the upper steel section should go.

How about we just re-name the Gunningsville Bridge "Bridge #1" and this one "Bridge #2" and call it a day?

"Which bridge is easiest to get to Wheeler...oh take Bridge 2"

"I'm downtown, how do I get to Hillsborough?...take Bridge 1, hang a left"
