Nurse resignations will "cripple" office, says medical examiner

By: Jen Skerritt
3/12/2009 5:10 PM | Comments: 9

WINNIPEG - Union officials worry the province’s medical examiner’s office will be "crippled" after half of its nurse investigators handed in their resignation last week.
Manitoba Government Employees Union (MGEU) president Peter Olfert said five out of eight employees who investigate everything from suicides, homicides, to deaths in hospitals for the medical examiner’s office will resign in January.
He said the nurses asked for parity with other Manitoba and civil-service nurses since they are experienced nurses who are paid the same salary as a new graduate. Olfert said the response from government has been "lukewarm."
Nurse investigators often work alongside police and RCMP to determine whether a body needs to be sent for autopsy. Bodies can’t be released from a crime scene or hospital morgue until nurse investigators have attended the scene, and Olfert and other are concerned the resignations will cause a major backlog.
"It’s going to cripple their office," Olfert said. "It’s going to tie up police work, I believe, and families could be negatively affected as well."

I'm prepared for the Winter, so who is in for the meeting next Saturday? (the date could be changed if someone wants to go and couldn't make it that day)

U of M a $1.8B-economic engine: study

By: Staff Writer

WINNIPEG — The University of Manitoba is a $1.8 billion economic engine for Winnipeg and the province, an economic impact analysis released today says.

The analysis, commissioned by the university and produced by PricewaterhouseCoopers, said the institution stimulates the province’s economy in several ways including wages, taxes paid, capital expenditures, and spending by students and visitors.

"The University of Manitoba has a real impact upon the lives of all Manitobans," David Barnard, the university’s president and vice-chancellor, said in a statement.

"From direct economic benefits to cultural and social interactions that enrich and enhance lives, we make a difference."

The university has or will create more than 19,000 jobs resulting in about $745 million in labour force income.

As well, the university generates about $286 million in taxes, its 183,000 out of town visitors each year spend more than $102 million locally, and its out of town students spend more than $130 million.

Sersiously? Anecdotally, go to the club on just about any friday or saturday. I don't see it busy there very often. When it first opened yes. Recently, no.

Clubs never last very long. The lifespan of a club here is barely a year. There are a few that have been going for almost 5 and they're practically legendary. Mostly, one will close and another will open in its place a few months later.

I knew about this long ago, the fact Mystique is owned by the same owner as Blush, they just moved there. As well the main promoter for Blush is the guy who now runs Republic so all the main acts that use to come to Blush moved to Republic. Therefor Blush has nothing. Good Luck on the Sports Bar!
