I'm in, and I'm serious too. I'll even suggest starting now with some bulbs (tulips & daffodils). Who knows the soil quality (I'm guessing not great), but I'm willing to try.

Let me put some thought into organization and I'll start a new thread.

I guess it's a small victory in that it hasn't become a parking lot.

However I'm sure, in true Hamilton fashion, it will be all tagged and fucked up before long.

We arrive, and there's two homeless/beggers/whatever one standing at the entry to the 'park', one lounging on a bench, "Hey can you gimme some money for smokes?"

My brother goes, "THAT'S what you wanted to show me??"
"Ya, it's LIUNA giving back to the community!"
"What used to be there?"
"A building!"

Thanks LIUNA. You've made this neighbourhood so much safer/better now with your dark, scary lil drug park! Good thing that building's gone though!

God. It's even more horrific than I remembered.

Fairhamilton, pm me. The water issue is huge for me. (I have post-traumatic stress from the countless hours I spent dragging 600' of hose around my kids' school for two summers till the trees and plants got established.) If we can find a convenient source, I'm all over it.

What did the building look like?
Maybe a building will return there one day...

The two storey white and red building I'm guessing off to the right of the pic. I wonder why that had to die, it looked kinda sweet, just probably needed a little TLC.

Nope. The big one off to the left. It collapsed "on its own".

The photo of the "parkette" doesn't look big enough to have been the bigger building to the left. How'd that happen? Maybe the building collapsed, because a random spacial distortion resulted in the area of the site shrinking?

The building that "collapsed on its own" is the building you see in the picture, Balfour building. The parkette is located at another spot on King William. LIUNA has demo'ed two buildings. That building wasn't special just made the streetscape continious really.

Photos are always a little deceiving. That space is alot bigger than it appears.

Although the building itself wasn't designated, it had some interesting details such as the lintels that the Ministry of Culture had instructed LIUNA to preserve as a condition of the demolition permit. Of course LIUNA just came in and smashed away.

Some government agency needs to investigate this company for it's business practices, it sounds like they wield too much power unchecked.

If that photos is deceiving and it is bigger than it appears, then it is indeed a lot of wasted space. Sadly.

^^ LIUNA stands for Labourers International Union of North America.

All I have to say Omro is e-search Hamilton's history in regards to 'Unions' and you'll understand the whole 'investigation' thing.

Hamilton is, and has always been, a 'Union' hotspot.

The city is getting bullied by LIUNA. I wonder what effect a bombardment of emails from the public would have? Demolishing a part of Hamilton's history and turning it into a really low quality park is a kick in the teeth for the public. If the building was maintained over the years, it could have been a great space to rent out to the burgeoning arts community in the area.

Does anyone know the difference in property taxes between a building and a park area? How much money is LIUNA saving by converting it to a low quality park? Most backyards are nicer than that...

That's where I had thought that patio was put. But then I haven't been downtown in ages to see what's happening there.

I'm aware that it's a Union, however how this Union operates is totally alien to me. Iin the UK, a Union is there merely to represent the interests of it's members, nothing more.

This Union acts worse than any greedy private commercial property owner/building contractor and somehow gets away with it.

Surely even a Union such as this is responsible to someone or something.
