I'm curious on what forumers think of City Market's chance of success here? There aren't a lot of residents immediately close by and they'll be competing with a very busy Costco. While they've got the tenants of the Post as potential customers, I'd imagine office worker footfall is down in the rest of the surrounding area post-Covid. Thoughts?

I don't think Costco is really competition for this type of store. Lots of condos around the library, where else are they going? IGA maybe?

People will pick stuff up on the way home from work too, I do all the time.

Depends on the terms of their lease. You assume shoplifting and security is going to be a huge cost. I guess their biggest mistake will be going with the wrong product mix for the area.

I think downtown east of Burrard is very poorly served by grocery stores. Nesters, Urban Fare, T&T, IGA, and a handful of ethnic grocers are hardly enough for the population especially when you consider the West End has two Safeways, a Whole Foods, an Independent, a No Frills, and many more ethnic options.

I wouldn't be surprised if City Market becomes a go-to option for many of the residents in Yaletown considering how many of my friends who lived or live there complain about Urban Fare's prices and selection.

Way bigger and more variety than anything else in Yaletown or Gastown (not counting Costco). It's gonna be super popular!

Agreed that the only direct competition is the IGA on Robson.
It may pull some customers from T&T, but they have different target markets.

CityMarkets tend to have a lot of prepared foods, so I suspect that this one will as well.
They'll take a while to customize their product mix to customer preferences.

the people living in 500 sq/ft condos in yaletown don't usually need to buy 18 liters of ketchup with a canoe.

CityMarkets is a way better option than costco. Also, I think its the biggest store going east (other than costco) until you hit Clark and Hastings.

Costco downtown is jammed just as much as the other locations, and you do see lots of people walking out with their items rather than driving. But it's typically somewhere that people do a portion of their shopping at, not all of it.

If City Market can survive in Park Royal, and in Lonsdale (with several alternate supermarkets nearby) they should have no problems at The Post.

Aside from their closing the in-store restaurant (COVID victim I guess) it seems pretty busy every time I go. I live nearby and like to shop there instead of Independent on Davie Street. Decent selection for a smaller store.

The City Market Arbutus does well when ever I am in there .... I have no doubt the Post Office location will do great. if anything the Nestors down in Woodwards should be worried as I think they will take a good hit in biz.

and at 50,000 sq. ft. it will be the destination grocery store downtown as it will be the largest. The Safeway's on Davie and on Robson are listed at 44,000 sq ft seem like the 2nd largest ones.

I am hoping we get a mini or little sibling (Vancouver downgrade version) to the Loblaws Maple Leaf Garden (it being 85000 sq ft) >> https://www.blogto.com/city/2011/11/..._leaf_gardens/

I have been there a few times and love it! great store for a downtown.

Problems at IGA two blocks away from The Post City Market
https://globalnews.ca/news/9940626/r...-thefts-brawl/

Will it be the same at this new grocery store?

The City Market will be further inside the building up escalators, I think, so that may make it harder to run out of the store.
Maybe they'll install turnstiles?
I've noticed that Safeway at Broadway & Commercial has one-way gates when you enter the store.
