One of the astronauts (an Austinite ) in the middle of his 6 month stay on the International Space Station, just took a photo of Austin from the station as it flew over.

I love those images from space. As always, this shot shows the incredibly absent major east west thoroughfare anywhere near downtown.

I know it's obvious but it's funny how Darrell K. Royal stadium makes everything else look small.

Good Lord. Look at Mueller. Greg Weaver, please plant a hell of a lot more trees out at your Mueller development! I know it was our old airport...but, some big, transplanted oaks would be nice. WOW...I had no idea of how much of a "hole" that huge development makes in the middle of urban Austin.

That area is going to look void for many years to come as the few "baby" trees they planted begin to mature.

On another note, in examining this image, we need to better utilize Burnet and N. Lamar as dense, urban avenues. In addition...South Congress, Riverside, Airport, S. Lamar, E. Sixth/E. Seventh, etc...need to see even more dense development than they are currently (more compact, taller projects).

Hmm. I wonder if the same person did it. The second one has a signature but the first one doesn't.

Agreed. And no sycamores. They're ok trees I guess if you have the room, but they have a lifespan of about 100 years, and once they hit that number they become trouble because they become hollow and brittle. The house next to us had one in the backyard. The drought killed it, but it was already near the end of its life. It was probably 70 feet tall. One night during a strong cold front with a lot of wind, the top 20 feet broke off and clipped their house. I was in my bedroom on the other end of our house, and I clearly heard it fall. And I knew right away what it was because we'd been eyeing it since it had been leaning even, and was nearly completely dead. It didn't do too much damage to their house, it just clipped the eve and knocked off a few boards, but it could have been worse. Their bedroom is less than 10 feet away from where it was.

I wonder if the same could be said for suburban developments up north...can't see those in the picture here. Due to it being the airport, they didn't have the mature trees, but those developments up north sometimes simply clear-cut to have a blank slate with which to start...I hate that. I agree 100% that the little "stick-trees" as I call them don't do much. It takes a couple of decades for those neighborhoods to feel more mature, and the trees have a lot to do with it in my opinion.

Lol, what are you smoking? It sounds like you are trying to blame the development somehow.

Makes sense. I can't say it's my favorite picture, but I think the continuity in various settings is kinda neat.

From the Mueller Facebook page today:

Did you know that most of the pecan trees that exist in Mueller came from a farm in Bastrop that was going to be destroyed? We had 500 of the trees transported to an undeveloped portion of Mueller and then planted in the parks.

Me too, but I think I might like it a bit more without the black spiral, which I know is a major application to the design, just my opinion.

Yeah, I'm not sure what Golden was getting at.
