I had myself a nice night downtown last night.

Here are some pics I took.

The Province building

The Port

Canada Place

Woodwards

Harbour Centre (or for any Americans who visit, Harbor Center, hehe)

Information booth and screen

The Marine Building

Christmas Tree!

Christmas Crane!

Business Towers (wish we had a couple dozen more of these)

Bamboo!

Robson street

My favorite store downtown, the Japanese convenience store!

And last but not least, my destination for the night.

All pics are my own!

Cheers!

I've posted many sunsets from my balcony but this is the first sunrise I've taken from my view. This is from earlier this week:

And some from today, downtown:

I really like that angle from the helipad, with the Shangri-La and Wall Centre framing the valley.

Here's a neat photo I found on flickr:

Great pictures. I really like the "foggy night" one with the streets and streetlights shrouded in ground-level mist, the skyline rising beyond.

My walk to SkyTrain | part 1

I live in Vancouver's Commercial Drive neighbourhood, which is one of our most eclectic, and I took some photos today of the local part of my daily commute. I did this photo tour late morning at around 11am.

A few steps into my commute takes me from my apartment to Commercial Drive. I'm close enough to be seconds away from the shops, bank, grocery store, etc., but far enough away that there is no road noise.

Turning onto Commercial Drive I head South towards the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain station.

The cafe coming up on the corner, Prado, is my neighbourhood haunt.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

The City installed a couple of dozen new bike racks this past week along my part of Commercial Drive. They are the single "hitching post" type bike racks that can handle a couple of bikes without taking up too much sidewalk space, which is appreciated for parts of the city with narrow sidewalks like much of Commercial Drive. The ones in front of Prado are usually claimed by fixies and vintage road bikes, sure signs that hipsters lurk within.

My walk to SkyTrain | part 2

Murals are a big part of Commercial Drive and Cafe deux Soleils is getting a brand new one.

This is a classic Commercial Drive shot of a coffee shop, market, parked bicycle with a child seat, old shabby apartment buildings, and a SkyTrain crossing Commercial Drive on its way to downtown. The train in the photo is one of our new Bombardier Mk2.5 SkyTrain cars, part of the 30% fleet expansion we took delivery of for the Olympics.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

By contrast here is a train composed of original Bombardier Mk1 cars. The two trains were about 90 seconds apart, which is normal for SkyTrain during much of the day.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

Commercial Drive is also pretty much ground zero for wannabe-anarchist lefties. These next two posters were plastered all along The Drive earlier in the day. They will probably be torn down or covered up in a day or two. The basic thrust of 99% of the posters is that business is bad, the government is bad, war is bad, marches are good, the police are always bad, criminals are always innocent unless they are middle- to upper-income white men, nobody should not do anything anywhere since everything everywhere was once First Nations' land, and lastly the government with the support of businesses and most white people are fighting a war against immigrants, people of colour, First Nations and especially women. Plus the Olympics is the worst thing to happen to anybody anywhere, ever, times a million!

I am arriving at the Commercial-Broadway Station precinct. The overhead line leads to downtown, which is about 5 minutes down the line from the station. The station is also the terminus of the 99 B-Line, which I believe is North America's most successful bus route with about 80,000 daily passengers. This route is slated to be replaced by rapid transit, hopefully an extension of SkyTrain, near the end of the decade.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

One of our new electric trolleys. The bus route along Commercial Drive uses articulated trolleys exclusively and is usually packed in both directions during most hours of the day.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

Looking west from Commercial-Broadway station one gets a great view of a growing piece of downtown Vancouver.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

The train on the elevated line is outbound from downtown and it is about to cross above the lower half of Commerical-Broadway station.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

The platforms at the lower level are for the Millennium line.

My walk to SkyTrain | part 3

The trains run on viaducts above the street level central atrium of the station.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

This aerial walkway leads to the lower platforms, 1 and 2, of the Millennium Line. The escalators to the right take passengers up to platforms 3 and 4 on the Expo and Millennium Lines. (The Millennium Line does a giant loop and passes through the same station twice.)

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

Platforms 1 and 2 on the Millennium Line.

The escalators leading to platforms 3 and 4.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

Another aerial walkway, this time traversing Broadway. It is far too narrow and there is a short- to medium-term plan to replace it with a new one that will utilize all of the the available width between the tracks.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

A busy platform with an arriving train from downtown.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

My train today is a new Mk2.5, which are fairly common now. They have a slightly larger passenger capacity due to a rejigged seating configuration and other passenger information and safety improvements like LED system maps and security cameras.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

The LED system map. It indicates the terminus with a red light and the stops along the way in white and these go out as one passes through each station.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

Well it was a busy train so I put my camera away at that point. That's my walk from home to the SkyTrain. It takes about 5 to 7 minutes and then the train is just shy of 10 minutes since I go to the last stop. Altogether my commute is about 25 minutes in length.

Taken by SFUVancouver, January 22nd, 2010.

Great pix all. Is the wind turbine actually rotating yet?

I enjoyed the tour of Commercial Drive, but I have to say that - unlike some other neighbourhoods - photos (any photos) really don't do that area justice. It has to be experienced in person, because it is one of the most vibrant and authentic places in the city limits. Great pix regardless.

Oh, and are those whales at the Granville Bridge being painted over? That will be so sad... they are part of the DNA of the city.
