Is there something in the water in Calgary, or is it just a coincidence that several of the posters from there are such infantile, noxious twats?

I've gotta say... it's suuuuper SSP that I haven't been online in like 10 days but Lio's "wooden shacks" trolling is still going on. Hilarious. I want to applaud O-Tacular for his amazing rebuttals and keeping his cool, I would not have been able to do nearly as well.

I made a new thread so that Lio can keep spewing his bilge in a more appropriate setting... so here are some skylines...

Edit: Ah, the thread was removed despite its necessity. It was titled "The Great Canadian Homerism and Trolling-cities-you've-never-been-to Thread" just for reference

Says the guy who only ever pops up to call people twats and complain ad nauseam about political correctness and SJW’s.

Also typical of you having no sense of humour. Parody and sarcasm goes right over your head.

I don’t usually wade in but his trolling is so obnoxious. I bet he’d find Mount Royal hideous with all of its turn of the century wooden shacks.

Nice pics btw. East Village is really coming along.

Yup, as soon as they shut down the municipal airport Edmonton busted through that tabletop skyline in a big way. In order for Calgary to do the same it would require something beyond a supertall

Positively Shanghai/Shenzhen-esque building density going on here.

Looks absolutely nothing like the original 'sore thumb' rendering (which I thought was pretty ugly). This newer version is better.

The original Phare was totally out of proportion too - that's a fact whether people like it or not. I wouldn't dream of attacking MolsonEx for having expressed that opinion. It's mine as well. I'm far from a "homer".

I also really don't think it applies here. A wooden shack is a wooden shack, no homerism there. You guys see it everywhere, but it's only in your imagination.

Calling these homes wooden shacks is ignorant and meant to be derogatory. Both define homerism. It's particularly egregious since you have brought up Calgary's "shacks" many, many times and haven't pick up a thing on home construction. The exterior cladding only defines the appearance. It is completely superficial on the build quality and functions of the home.

And, Compared to the cladding we use today? Our cities are chock full of thin layers of acrylic stucco applied to gypsum board. Thisisn't just "shacks" either. It's low, mid, high rises and skyscrapers.

There have been a second version after the first one and it seemed rather good but still a bit bulky even for the highest tower. The first version looked like something straight out of Dubai tho...

Now for this new version, it sure looks a bit more ''boring'' as it is all squared...but still, I think the cladding and colours could be very good yet. Let's cross fingers for something very good because this piece of land is a prime spot!

The reason you remind me of Dwight is the ridiculous lengths that you go to defend literally any asinine argument.

This is you arguing that Trump isn't racist and that Calgary is the only city in North America with wooden SFH's (sorry, shacks) in its inner city:

The first version was laughable but I liked the second version with the triangular tower. This new scale is better suited for the area though. Hopefully the new design isn’t too generic.

^ Great Ottawa pics J.Ot13 ..Especially with the Gatineau hills in the background. Ditto for those most recent Edmonton pics. re: Wooden shacks..I was in Richmond Hill some years back, and there was still a small farm surrounded by urbanity and chain stores...I forget it's name.I can't remember if they still had livestock, but they were definitely selling country/rural themed wares of some sort..it was like a country house and some decent property right in the city..It was really jarring!..That quaint yellow wooden house/shack whatever you call it with the CBD right on it's heals kind of reminded me of that..It goes to show how much Calgary boomed in such a short period, and good on the owner for holding off. Looks like prime real estate!

You can still find some examples like this across the GTA. People who don't care about selling out for millions, or are maybe just betting on an even bigger offer down the road. I don't think that's what the discussion around housing vernacular was about though.

Where do you think this farmhouse is? Hanover, Ontario or 10-minutes North of Downtown Mississauga?

^ Yes..That's crazy!..Ottawa has some of that as well, but more In the far flung subdivisions, and not in any business/commercial section near downtown..Ottawa's CBD seques into older established urban neighbourhoods with small lots (as a rule), before tapering off into commercial areas..Obviously, there's the greenbelt and river(s), but no inner city private farms or a modest SFH sitting on 3/4 acre of property unless it's government land (experimental farm) or the odd estate, which are away from the direct CBD anyways.

I love seeing that odd out of place building when I'm walking or driving by somewhere. I love the contrast for the novelty of it. And I'm a big fan of country style homes and I've love to see more of them with that architecture built in the city.

Speaking of not selling out for the money, I always think back to this artist's house in Oakville right smack dab in the middle of a subdivision.

They eventually sold or maybe the Estate sold it. It was always funny how the sidewalk used to end and the start again after their lot. They also cut down the tree.

Not shacks by the CBD, but unexpected neighbourhoods, and not just houses, in cities is also fascinating. Like old Meadowvale Village in Sauga or Hidden Valley in Burlington. Both basically next to the highway and major roads.

Click on the pics to zoom in.
