I don't understand the criticisms of a hotel located there, either. Sure, it wouldn't be a place where I would want to stay, but a high end luxury hotel is being built right across the river. And there would be a connection to LSD to this hotel. And then there is the Sheraton just a few blocks west, along the river. It's not crazy to think a hotel could do well there.

I'm going to go with the change to no hotel having more to do with related being a competent developer and not a total Yahoo like Kellher was. Hotel likely was never viable at this location which helped with the downfall of the spire to begin with. Even Kellher ditched the hotel that was proposed by Beitler or whoever originally proposed the spire.

The market HAS spoken, no hotel is proposed...

This design can be a very big hit-or-miss depending on the type of glass they use. My dream would be for it to be cladded dark glass, similar to Sears Tower but a light shade. Also, if this proposal is real, the observatory view is looking over the Aon Center. Add in the spire, and this could be a new city tallest.
The original Spire didn't have a spire ...

uh oh, i've got some bad news to share.

related has released their new scheme for the site and it appears to be a ~500' tall stump of the former chicago spire proposal from calatrava.

Oh well at least they are still doing the bridge even though it's too low for any boats to pass under.

I can't stop looking at Aon.
It really goes to show just how freaking tall that Spire proposal was.

Why the hell was the two tower scheme not approved by the alderman? Was it the podium?

This thread inspired me to do some digging on the old Gateway Tower proposal by Gensler. Holy SH*T that was an awesome proposal. I sincerely wish that would have gotten a serious look by Related Midwest.

Speaking of unbuilt Spires and Gateways, I recently completed a video of my 3d model of Chicago showing a number of unbuilt projects. Apologize if this is off topic.

The mile high tower would have been slightly out of proportion to the rest of the skyline.

I suppose that does make some sense; it reminded me of something we see in Dubai or Chinese cities. Those mall-type podiums that aren't very street friendly.
Plus the podium design didn't match the art-deco look of the towers anyway.

I hope the towers remain similar (this is probably my personal favorite tower proposal in the US right now, the staggering design is fantastic).
