It seems like 16-23rd floors are two units on each floor. That would be B facing Nicola and I guess it's one floor down (20th floor)

4 floors were on fire when it finally got knocked down. The fire did NOT start from an explosion. That was after a while. We were on a job site across the road & my coworkers noticed the fire begin & called it in. A small engine was already on site but clearly needed back up. The debris fell often & caught the bushes on fire as well.

Edited to add: fire started in the south bottom window & grew from there.

I would have guessed drug lab. But something isn't working with the sprinklers if multiple units went up like that.

Trudeau explains that due to the age of the building, a sprinkler system wasn’t installed above the second floor.

Mandatory Sprinklers in Vancouver Ten Years On

In Canada, the City of Westmount in suburban Montreal was the only municipality to have mandated sprinkler protection of residential buildings before 1990

Are drug labs a thing in condos? Yes, they are.

That building will be a tough one to repair as it will be very difficult to match the pink glazing.

It was completed in 1991. I think it's a James K M Cheng design.

Built/completed in 1991 so maybe it was under construction/approved before the rule change.

Two units I saw had electric induction stoves but they seem to have gas fireplaces in the upper story units..

I'm shocked the building was old enough to not require sprinklers! The insurance costs on that strata are going to go through the roof.

Correction; this is unconfirmed, but word has it that the cause was not from construction, but from an e-scooter battery explosion.

Those e-scooters can really be bad news. I'm a bit surprised anybody living in that building would use one.

Stratas are going to start banning e-bikes in units.

Probably a 'homemaker' or 'student'.

Apparently it also ignited other materials on the street. Good thing it happened in rainy October not July.

Apart from the astronaut kid reference, the units are big enough (3 bedrooms?) for a family with a university age kid or could be a shared rental with a few foreign students.

My bet would be on the three students or tech workers sharing. Though listings show a claimed rental rate of $6,400 a month! They also show the smaller two beds having maintenance fees of over $1,000 a month! Aging highrises ain’t cheap to maintain an accident like this will skyrocket those costs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see sprinkler-less highrise strata’s become almost uninsurable.

Crazy all the assumptions being made here just because it was an e scooter battery. They're getting more and more popular, it could literally be any demographic

Is anybody really storing their e-bikes in their units? Most stratas ban all bikes from elevators and common lobby areas.

Do you really think you'd find many owners of those suites on an e-scooter? As others pointed out, maybe the folks they rent them out to use them. The units aren't cheap (though this may change that and many have been on the market for months). As I said look for insurance costs on this place to skyrocket (as if they haven't already). It makes one wonder about other buildings like the nearby Emerald West built at the same time. They might end up having to retrofit sprinklers at great cost if they want insurance.

The batteries are often removable. Even if the bike is stored, where the battery is being charged is usually the issue unless you manage to pierce or short the battery somehow.
