Costco will be a ghost town for weeks. I really hope they take everyone to court to get their revenue back

Is the extra Translink service included in the @$600 million taxpayers are doling out, or is it over and above that?

feels like for this the public overall vibe is resentment and unhappiness, very unlike Olympic or Expo vibes, maybe I'm just getting a biased representation from social media but I'm not seeing much for a positive effect on our daily lives during this

There was a ton of whining leading up to the 2010 games. You'd be forgiven for not remembering that, as nobody who complained seems to own up to it and it was a huge success by any metric.

We'll see how this goes, it's a lot longer and the actual game days are spaced out. I assume they are designing the party zones to open for all of the games but how many will be well attended?

We didn't get a new SkyTrain line or highway opening right before this one as an obvious public benefit, and there are fewer opportunities for local people to attend events.

But I feel like there was plenty of pre-Olympic bickering too, it was just mostly forgotten about during the actual event. Maybe this will be the same?

This is not going to be fun for me. My company has a job at one of the condo towers near Smithe and Beatty from the beginning of May to early August. Not going to be great getting there on game days especially when I have to deliver product for the job. At least the street I'll be using won't be closed.

I could NOT care less for this FIFA thing, and can't wait for it to be gone.

Like the Taylor concert, IDGAF myself, but a lot of friends' friends seem to be going apeshit. Guess we don't live right or something.

2010 led to a crazy amount of new winter sports infrastructure being built across the entire region that is still being used today.

Everything with regards to the World Cup is temporary. There is probably no legacy aspect...and the fact that this city is likely losing their pro-soccer team is a testament to this.

Definitely feels like FIFA's taking more than they're giving... as per usual.

streets are constantly closed in this city for events especially around BC place

It's going to be ok. Vancouver is only hosting 7 games. We will all survive.

Motion to close Granville from Georgia-Davie during FIFA:
https://council.vancouver.ca/2026031...sc_motion1.pdf

I see this essentially as another pilot for closure and buses to permanently run on Howe and Seymour

The one thing I can think of that people might associate with this event in the future is the PNE Amphitheatre — but it was going to be built anyway, they just rushed the completion for FIFA (at great expense).

That would be disastrous. Has anybody seen how snarled up traffic gets on Seymour especially in the evening? Making the bus permanently shuffle down that route will really bog it down. To make that work the city is going need to keep three of the four lanes open and wean themselves off the meter revenue.

And in a city that rains as much as Vancouver pedestrianizing Granville is totally unnecessary for more than half the year.

Businesses are quite happy with this decision, as should everyone hoping to see Granville Street turn over a new leaf. A closure (Olympics had the same, yes?) full of people and celebration, aligning with the closure of the most problematic social housing site on the street. It will be a good indicator of what Granville Street could be.

Buses often do the alternate routes anyways, with block parties, night time closures, and for the weeks during the bridge construction. No brainer.

FWIW Costco has been in communication with FWC26 on impacts to the store. (There's no info in the FOI request)

Maybe they'll let them use Beatty Street parkade entrance with some kind of security to restrict people to just enter/leave the store.

Vancouver reveals details of massive FIFA Fan Festival coming during World Cup

The FIFA World Cup is coming, and so is the party.

More details have been shared regarding the FIFA Fan Festival, which is taking over the PNE in Vancouver for 28 days, from June 11 to July 19. Organizers say it will transform the PNE into a “FIFA World Cup hub” with “family-focused entertainment to immersive fan activities for all ages.”

“The FIFA Fan Festival will be Vancouver’s biggest watch party and the best place to cheer on live World Cup action outside of BC Place Vancouver,” the City of Vancouver’s Host Committee announced in a media release on Thursday.
