I get Mexico City didn't work last time, but if KEF, ICN, work wouldn't Mexico City work now with the connection build up in Calgary?

That seems to be something can easily fit into their sched.

@cory - YYC-DUB is still flying too and missing from your list (guessing 3x weekly?)

It's 5x weekly. Realizing I deleted it when I copied and pasted it.

Agreed!

Beyond being a major destination city in and of itself, MEX is also a huge LatAm hub. Today most destinations in Mexico and LatAm (other than a handful of beach resort airports) are only accessible from YYC on either UA or AA. But their limited frequencies into IAH and DFW make some those connections infeasible.

MEX would be a massive addition to YYC -- and hugely helpful for both leisure and business travellers. (And, yes, if we can make places like KEF and ICN work out of Calgary it sure seems like we could make MEX work for WS or AM.)

MEX yields from Calgary are just trash, simple as that. There's a reason it keeps coming and going...

Also the Mexican government is cutting back on MEX slots and they would have to use the new NLU airport.

WS next Mexican destination is likely the new Tulum airport.

I got a promo email from WS about Seoul and I'm a bit surprised. 44x weekly seems like a lot no?

I see AC added Tulum from YYZ & YUL. Definitely could see WS adding it from YYC. I’d rather fly into there when staying in Playa del Carmen or points south.

Right, I meant the overall schedule (I worded that horribly). 44x weekly overall on 7 planes seems quite ambitious (to me at least)

Admittedly it’s based on personal experience and not data … but demand on the YYC-MEX route sure seemed pretty high when I flew it on both WS and AM. Always full or nearly full flights, with a mix of O+D and connecting passengers at both ends.

High demand, zero competition… it seems that “yield” should then come down to a factor of how an airline chooses to price the route. It seems like yield - if it’s broken - is fixable.

And it’s worth noting that YVR-MEX (similar market, same costs, almost identical route characteristics) can support multiple flights per day on two carriers — with pretty reasonable fares.

I believe 4 more? Last summer it was daily LGW/LHR/CDG and 5x weekly FCO/DUB and 3x weekly NRT/BCN/EDI (for 40x weekly). And this summer will be 44x weekly (daily LHR/CDG/FCO/NRT and 5x weekly DUB and 4x weekly BCN/EDI and 3x weekly ICN).

You're getting ahead of yourself. KEF and ICN haven't even started yet, so calling them a success is a bit premature. (not saying they won't be, just stating a fact)

You have it the other way around. Filling a plane is easy. Extracting good yield is hard.

YVR-MEX and YYC-MEX are definately not similar markets. AM will be 4x daily on YVR-MEX in peak winter this year, and they couldn't even make 1x daily work to YYC.

It’s interesting that AM has up to 4 daily YVR-MEX flights (plus AC). Vancouver’s Latin population is only slightly larger than Calgary’s or Edmonton’s and much smaller than their combined. Unless there are other factors ie. both YYC/MEX airport runways altitude load restrictions; maybe a much wealthier population in BC? AM wanting to consolidate all their flights to YVR? IMO, End of the day it would be hard for WS to get any slots into MEX since the government is restricting new entrants and sending them to the new airport in Mexico City. It’s up to AM I believe to start up MEX-YYC, since they would have extra slots there.

When visa restrictions were reintroduced, and you can’t support all the frequencies to YVR, YEG and YYC anymore, what do you do? Consolidating into a single base makes sense, and politically you can ‘punish’ the Prime Minister at the time by withdrawing from ‘his’ city.

If you factored in the YYZ turns it was 47x weekly in S23. But yeah only 40x intercontinental flying.

I'm guessing the YYZ turn gets axed all together, leaving it at just 44x weekly for S24.

Here's a breakdown:
LHR/CDG/FCO/NRT are everyday, so that's 4 right there.

Sun: EDI/DUB (6)
Mon: EDI/DUB (6)
Tue: BCN/DUB (6)
Wed: EDI (5)
Thu: BCN/DUB (6)
Fri: BCN/EDI/ICN (7)
Sat: BCN/DUB (6)

Friday is the only ops days we know for ICN, as they didn't specifically state what days its flying. I'm guessing Wednesday is one of them, and probably Sunday (similar to NRT last year).

Would mean 2 days a week all 7 aircraft would be required. So doable, but a pretty tight schedule.
