i've asked contractors why we don't ever use them when in Calgary you see them building strip malls with them....they've told me its just about availability....they have so many operators and every company has a tower crane so it is economical to use....here they generally are rented and operators are not plentiful.

That's great about a residential building at Donald and St. Mary.

That stretch of Donald between St. Mary and York is such a wasteland currently.

The developer likes to keep a low profile. It should all come out soon. I will be interested to see what you guys think of it. Some will love it, some will hate it I think. Its a good urban project but the look is contemporary in a different way....it's not shiny glass....and its not black....or even grey.....or white.....its not pointy and its kind of squat....but it has a permanence and a texture not typical for new taller buildings.

its been a tough two year project so I'm excited to see it finally start construction.

My aesthetic has definitely changed recently.

Also...this Osborne project has evolved really nicely....it looks much better than the zoning images....cleaner, softer.....some beautiful brick colours...the dark greys are now a multi-coloured brown and the yellow is closer to a light tan, also multi coloured....it should have a really nice feel on the street.

Can I just say I’m very glad that Winnipeg didn’t go through the glass tower phase because those buildings in Toronto, Vancouver, and to a lesser extent Edmonton are so sterile it just feels like vertical sprawl. I have to remind myself to not take for granted the variety of architecture present in Winnipeg.

Now I’m even more excited to view this project with the way you just described it.

For the Osborne project they will likely use something like this. Small and compact.

The Pumphouse project is using one.

This is correct.

so what's the deal with the prohibition on closing the back lane for construction? what actual use does that back lane get that isn't easily substituted by just taking osborne?

The Property and Development committee overruled the extra restrictions that City Centre added. The developer can apply for permits to temporarily close streets or sidewalks as normal.

That's good news! These NIMBYs are always so short sighted.

It wasn't NIMBYism. It was a well-intended but misguided attempt to keep things walkable during construction. A second, more cynical view would be that the councillor knew it would be shot down by a higher committee while she gets to look sensitive to the opposition. I still subscribe to the first explanation, though.

Ah I see, I was thinking, how are we ever supposed to have growth an redevelopment if we make builders jump through too many useless hoops.

I believe this is the MO for every councilor now. They are put in this stupid position of having to go against the people they have to knock on doors for support every four years. It seems wrong, but its the smart thing to do.

Anyways, thankfully this has been overturned. It would have been impossible.

Any approximate timelines for this one?

Walked past the site the other day, and can't wait for it to get started.
