I was a part of a Canada 150/Ottawa 2017 recap panel on CBC Radio recently. Here's the link if you'd like to check it out. http://www.cbc.ca/listen/shows/ottaw...gment/15342612

I picked the Junos as my favourite Ottawa 2017 event. If I had to pick a top 3 I'd say The Junos, Kontinuum and Mosaicanada (the woman from iPolitics noted the Track and Field Championships as her favourite event).

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Ottawa 2017 on a whole and maybe what events stood out.

For me:
- Kontinnum
- La Machine
- Miwate

For me it was these three events that stood out:

- La Machine
- MosaiCanada
- Red Bull Crashed Ice

* But I also thought the 105th Grey Cup Celebrations were pretty huge for Ottawa, and OSEG did a great job hosting it at TD Place.

The Mayor asked a similar question on Twitter this morning and there seems to be a good cross-section of responses where the majority indicated La Machine was one of their favourite events of 2017:

My list in terms of bringing people to the Ottawa-Gatineau region and placing us front and centre nationally and internationally.

1. La Machine;
2. MosaiCanada;
3. Grey Cup festival.

Personally, as a hockey fan, I loved the NHL 100 Classic weekend (Melnyk's comments aside). I was also a huge fan of Kontinnum for it's wide time frame (though it could be shorter to speed up construction of Lyon station) and accessibility (I went about a dozen times, no ticket).

Biggest disaster was Canada Day. Inspiration Village was a big disappointment.

Kontinuum was one of my favourites. The first time I went I didn't love it; it was too quick and I didn't love to the video production. Too abstract. But by the second and third time I grew on me. It was one of the few really local events that celebrated Ottawa, included some cool technology, and got people (me included) excited about LRT. Miwate was good too. I left impressed. I'd love to see that event continue.

Never got a chance to view Kontinuum, but La Machine was awesome.

Canada 150 rink to cost $2.5 million to operate through February

Nicholas Dunne, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: January 26, 2018 | Last Updated: January 26, 2018 9:00 AM

Taxpayers will spend an additional $2.5 million to extend the operation of the Canada 150 skating rink on Parliament Hill, Canadian Heritage confirmed Thursday.

The heritage department had originally planned to keep the rink open until New Year’s Eve, but Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly announced in November that it would be extended until the end of February.

The costs to keep open and maintain the rink between Dec. 7 to Dec. 31 totalled $5.6 million. The additional $2.5 million will cover operational expenses that include staffing, labour and snow removal, as well as administrative costs such as marketing, social media and website support.

The total cost adds up to $8.1 million when other programming and administrative costs are included, although Joly’s press secretary, Simon Ross, said the department expects to be under budget for the projected $2.5 million cost.

Ross said the rink will be donated to a community in need, and that they expect more than 100,000 people to have used the rink by the weekend.

Aaron Wudrick, a spokesman for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, scoffed when he heard about the added cost.

“They could’ve built 150 smaller rinks across Canada for the same price,” Wudrick said.

“This is a waste of money.”

Not sure if this is the proper place for it, but didn't see any other Winterlude related threads...

My god is the official Winterlude calendar painful to navigate. Is this actually the best they can provide people with: https://app.pch.gc.ca/application/ba...0&submit=Apply ??

I want to make a genuine effort to go to some events this year, but if I have to search day by day, through vaguely named events just to figure out which ones I want to go to it's barely worth my time. Can they not commission someone to make a day by day schedule similar to ones used at big music festivals??

Looks like the folks behind bringing La Machine to Ottawa are looking to bring them back for 2020 or 2021:

I like the idea of bringing back La Machine with different machines, a different story and different locations. And I don't mind them bringing back certain events like the picnic on the bridge and Mìwàte. Those should be annual events. But I hope they don't try to replicate exactly what worked last year. We need some new events too.
